I'm graduating in a couple of weeks, my parents know I've been wanting a smoker, and have offered to buy me one. I've got it narrowed down to these two.

Weber

Masterbuilt

The major con associated with the Masterbuilt is that it only goes up to 275, and chicken/turkeys need to run above 300 to really render the skin. I've never smoked poultry at 275 so I'm not sure how it would turn out. However, it seems like more of set it and forget it unit which is appealing, along with a higher capacity.

I'm sure I'd be happy with either unit, so I came here to hear the opinions from those who have experience with these smokers. I've been smoking on my Weber kettle grill with the smokeanator attachment for years but want something with more capacity. I could still do chickens or a turkey on my current set-up as well if I didn't like the results from the Masterbuilt. TIA for your replies

Both are good choices.

I'm smoking chickens as I respond to you. I can't recall ever actually eating the skin of slow smoked chicken. Far too strong a smoke flavor so I don't believe that should be an issue. If you want to eat the skin, use a rotisserie or bake it.

I've never used electric and wonder if you can impart enough smoke flavor using only wood chips. I hear good things about the Smokey mountain line. Regardless, read the one star reviews for an idea of what could be problems with each.

I have units that are similar to both...and can tell you each has good and bad points...

the charcoal unit gives much better smokey taste than the electric unit...however, with the charcoal unit, I have to wake up in the middle of the night to reload with charcoal if I am smoking a large turkey...

your choice should really depend on what your preferences are....if you like heavy smoke (like I do), you are not gonna get it with the electric unit...however, if you are good with mild smoke, the electric unit is a lot easier to cook on and clean up afterwards...

Good point. I often get up at 4am to start the smoke if I want some things to be done by 6pm that day. I've never trusted starting at 10 pm and getting up at 3am to keep it going. Maybe I should try it.

I am typically cooking for the noon meal, so I really have no choice...It actually works pretty good in that you aren't awake to be obsessing over it and checking on it constantly...

trouble is, you just don't sleep worth shite knowing you are going to be waking up at 3AM and then trying to go back to sleep while smelling like smoke..

I really love my Weber. I added an Aubins controller for long cooks. It works great. I also have a 2 probe remote thermometer (Maverick) that I can keep by my bedside to monitor temps. I use it frequently.

I've no experience with the electric. Congratulations on the culmination.

When the Masterbuilt burns out, the Smokey Mt will still work if that matters to you

I started out with a Brinkman electric smoker (looks similar to the Weber but it is electric) and I LOVED IT! Easy clean up and did the trick for all of my smoking needs. I called it my crockpot of smoking because I just stuck whatever I was smoking on and more or less left it alone. Granted there is no temp control but it never was a problem.
I enjoyed it so much my husband gave me the Masterbuilt model you are looking at last year for Christmas. I have used it about 4 times and I hate the thing! I cannot get the temp right and find things are cooking too fast even when I keep lowering the temp. Plus it is a pain to clean. Also, not sure if it is not grounded properly but the darn thing shocks me everytime I touch it or any of the metal parts (including the inside racks). I put the cover on it and have resorted back to my Brinkman. I do my turkey on it every year and have never had any problems. Turkey comes out beautiful - pretty brown and so juicy.

that is just my experience - I would go with the electric over the charcoal if you want to do it the easy route.

Amazon has your master built 40 in a lightening deal right now for 239.99. Not sure if that's a good deal or not.
