I just dont see this squad playing better traditional basketball than our opponents; hence, IMO we need to press A LOT more

I saw a poster mention in another press,
"If our press is so effective, then why do we wait till we are loosing to use it"

He had a point. Looking at where our roster stands now and where it is going in the next two years, I believe it would benefit us to be one of the few teams to utilize the press throughout much of the game.

For the press you want long players. Height isn't nearly as important as length when the desired result is an errant pass by the offense. tall guys don't generally run as fast.

Jordan Mickey
7' 2" wing-span while having the nimbleness of the 6'8"235 lb that he is.
Tim Quarterman
AUTOMATICALLY BECOMES A FAVORITE if we were to press. A 6'6" 180 wiry/speedy guard with would finally be playing a game more suited to his skill set
Aaron Epps
6'9" 203 and already jacking up threes:) long, skinny
Jerrell Martin
6'10" wing-span on a 6'8" 242 guy that can move (he would play the center spot in the back of the press IMO)

This is even more-so the case next year. Imagine we get the only big fish on our radar, and our studs from this year are gone.

This would be a deadly press

Tim Quarterman
Antonio Blakeny
Brandon Sampson
Ben Simmons
Jordan Mickey (I had to)

I dont understand why Jones hates the press all of a sudden. His first year here we used it very well and he got the most out of a dog shite roster. This year we are loaded for the press and I have always argued that you can improve your bench by pressing. You speed the other team up and when players can get easy baskets they look like better players. We have the needed depth to press, you don't have to be a great basketball player to press so our weak bench could contribute pretty easily.

We do have the players to press more. And though we didn't really turn them over as much we did speed ODU up. They missed some layups and open jumpers in the stretch where we rallied but some would argue that's a by-product of speeding them up.

I will say I think Coleman and Morgan were outstanding on the press with Hickey bird-dogging...we caused more turnovers off the press with those guys. Not so sure we are as good at it this year. But with the serious issues we still have in man defense, we need to do something to cover for that glaring weakness.

Im actually ok with giving up some easy baskets on the press for the trade off that we can force turnovers/ bad shots and get easy baskets ourself. If we had a better man to man d that wasn't constantly fouling and allowing easy baskets I wouldn't be as willing to gamble on the press. I just feel like if we are going to give up easy baskets Id rather it happen while pressing.

I totally agree about the bench. The press would automatically promote the value of Quarterman and Epps.

why worry about having to out execute the other team in a half-court setting for an entire game when the other teams are starting the year out with players who are better at it.

I couldn't imagine a defensive center better than Jordan Mickey for a pressing team.

Either to have him protecting the goal, or (as I would choose: put his 7'2" wing span on the inbounder after made shots)

To this I agree heartbreak. Unfortunately, I think we're going to have to zone alot too. Too many of the same issues, poor rotation and communication, awkward hedging and showing on ball screens. Bigger guards but same issues.

These are re-occurring issues I hoped would have been adressed more effectively in pre-season with the new staff additions.

The press would offer up a lot of options for the roster. The press and then just run a motion offense with 2 cutters and 3 pickers. the bench guys would pretty much be the guys setting screens on offense and let which ever starters are in the game be the cutters.

To go zone would be a damn tragedy

Id love us to have the ability to go into a 2-3 trapping zone. We should go with a more aggressive zone to keep everyone active. When we go into our 2-3 our length causes problems but we give up way too many easy 3 pointers because we don't rotate with any urgency.

this is my fear. Can't have the Vanderbilt's of the world teeing-off and taking boucoo three's on us. Not even in the corner, casue they will hit em.

worst case scanario for this team would be a pack-line defense
all the guys are sagging (packed) into the paint in what lloks to be a zone but they each have a man.

when a defender's man has the ball the defender is to get nose to nose to his man = maximum pressure

when crowded nose-to-nose it totally takes away the pass to the post for there is no better post defense than ball pressure

problem with this, is the defender's man can blow by him because he is playing him too tight.

when he blow's by the defender, the offensive man then encounters a trap due to the fact that his defender is running with him and he is running into another defender who has sagged into the paint; hence giving his 'help' (Jordan Mickey:)

That's what this D is, it puts players in "help" position already instead of contesting the perimeter passes; while practically baiting guards to blow by their man into charges and traps

this defense has taken the mid-majors to all new levels by being an equalizer for many squads/

this defense takes away teams that can blow by you with speed, and teams with a dominant big-man.

It does leave itself open to the 3-pointer off the pass

The only thing I can think of to not press more is the minutes for the starters...especially in these tournament deals with three straight games or close to it.

We don't need all our starters in to run a good press. The bench would improve greatly with the press. We have good athletes on the bench and an athlete can really thrive in the press.

Me too but I also see hoopscoach's point about our continued lack of urgency and awareness in rotations. But at least we'd be agressive and forcing some action instead of tripping around losing folks and not knowing where we're supposed to be.
