yep. and yep re: tow.

not so much re: payload.

i have mine 350-ized (it was almost the same truck back then--stock rear springs slightly better on 350) with some other hauling mods, so its payload is close to 4000lbs (I'm sure Ford would tell me not to go that high, but i've driven cross-country with more and felt totally comfortable).

Still waiting on a answer as to why buying a piss ant motor in a truck should go together.

I still drive a Dodge 2500 with the 5.9L Cummins. I get 22 MPG if I drive 45 or 85. Towing a boat that in under 7k, my mileage drops down to 21 MPG and that is towing at 75-80 MPH.

325 hp and 375 ft. lb of torque is piss ant? Please explain.

You're comparing a 1/2-ton truck you've never driven to a 3/4-ton truck you have.

yea that's where the 250's and 350's shine. But with an empty bed, your fillings get rattled out, lol.

I own many trucks over the years. A truck to me is for work. I owned them with small V8's to 6.0L gas burners. I drove them like a bat out of hell. What I see with a truck with a piss ant motor will do is that once the motor hits around 60K miles, it's going to start to come apart.

Really not much difference then wind up throw away cars. Sure, it might have power to start new, but how long is it going to last? Guess people that are looking for these trucks will use them as mall crawlers.

your guess is as good as ours

as for the ones that built it....they did some pretty cool torture tests on it...not saying they can correctly predict real world numbers, but its not like all of the technology is brand new

sure its a little more complicated, but turbos are nothing new to the gas engine

Nail on the head. Most trucks sold today aren't used for work, they are used to get groceries, a tray of flowers from Lowes and maybe a 2x4. I just don't see how those little engines can can hold up under stress for 200000 miles.

So with this logic, the smaller engines don't last as long as the bigger engines?

I'm sure that you're aware that the bottom end of the 2.7 ecoboost is forged.

The bottom end is forged (typical in turbo applications)

Also, just curious....where did you get the idea that modern "small" engines won't last as long as "big" engines, relative to work load.

Sure, but at what point/pressures can a gas engine take? That is were getting at. Hell, one can build a 4 cyl motor to put out 500HP easy. Question is, how long it's going to last.

As a mall crawler, maybe a long time. As a work truck, to me, not long.

This is a question for the engineers that test them. At the way it is tuned from the factory, a very long time.

One can build a 7.0L LS7 to 1,000 as well, but how long will it last?

Just because something is forged doesn't mean it's bulletproof. Ford doesn't exactly have the best track record with these smaller turbo motors either...or, arguably, turbo motors in general.

not many people buying them are buying work trucks

if i had to tow 9,000 lbs 5 days a week, I wouldn't get an ecoboost, because its not economical

but these trucks fit the bill for a very large portion of buyers that need a truck a few times a month but don't want to be stuck with 15 MPG while commuting alone to work everyday

a truck doesnt have to be a mall crawler or work truck.....there's plenty of room in between those two where most buyers will fall

2.7L? Could not drive. Pretty sure a full size truck with an engine that small would shrink your penis.

No one said it was indestructible, but to say they will fall apart at 60k is ridiculous. The motors in the 03-04 Mustang Cobra's were FI and held up great under stress.

Tons of vehicles are turbo'd these days with lots of reliable miles among them.

This. I don't need a work truck. Mine will be my daily commuter to my white collar job. Just occasionally I need a truck to haul some things (furniture, BBQ grill, etc.) that I can't fit in my 4Runner and for some around the house tasks. And with the crew cabs these days, it will function just fine as a family vehicle as well.
