I was born and raised is rural Acadiana. One thing I've always found fascinating is how every candidate must run as a Democrat to win office in my parish. On statewide elections our area is trending Republican but you can't get elected dog catcher as a Republican locally. I know for a fact my state rep is a closest Republican and votes close to where our parish is philosophically.

that's because the state GOP is a bunch of incompetent arse-hats and the state DNC is a bunch of corrupt crooks. The corrupt crooks are much better at campaigning.

I don't think so man. It's almost as if you are an elitest if you run as a republican in our area. I think that could change with Obama and more candidates locally known as good men can step out as Republicans. I haven't seen anyone even try in 6 years to run as a Republican.

ETA: It's like running as a closet homosexual around here

For the old folks, it all goes back to the Great Depression. This is what my late unle Benton told me about politics back then:

During the depression, when many people were starving and losing their homes, the democratic party owned a hog farm. In every major election, the democratic party would pick their candidate. If their candidate won, the hogs would be slaughtered and the meat would be given out to the voters to show the party's thanks for their vote. If their candidate lost, the hogs would be slaughtered and sold out of state. For people who were literally starving and needed that meat (a delicacy at the time) to survive, the message was received.
