It's worldwide, not just in the US. I read an article a while back that pretty much confirms that "stupid breeds stupid," and that the collective intelligence of the human race is actually decreasing due to social programs, etc., that keep alive stupid people, who then make more stupid people.

It's just like coaching youth sports, you need to repeatedly hammer home a point over time, sometimes years, before kids get that "aha!" moment and things start to click for them. Personal finance should be a class, or at least a segment of a math or home ec class, that is taught every year from 1st through 12th grade. Hammer this crap home, starting at learning about money for the little kids, then progress on to checking/savings accounts as they get older. How the banking system works, how Wall Street works. Stocks, bonds, and investing. Heck, by the time you are a senior you should know about derivitive securities and how the commodities markets operate.
This financial background along with a thorough understanding of government and civics would do far more in helping these kids to succeed than having school programs on bullying and diversity and crap like that.
You want to catch some kids attention? Teach them how to make some bank.
