My wife has a brand new computer so I'm trying to download Kaspersky to it...the 192MB file is only downloading at 250-400kb/sec. That seemed awfully slow so I tested out my laptop to see how fast mine would go- its average was 1.1-1.5MB/sec. Both connected to the same internet connection.

My computer - 5 year old Acer apsire
Her computer- brand new Lenovo Y40

I wouldn't even think computer performance would matter with download speed, wouldnt that be internet connection??

Could be, but that would still be a pretty crappy NIC.

I just finished setting up her computer out of the box. Everything about hers is faster than mine right now expect for downloading something

ETA: I also just ran a speedtest on both.

Her laptop- 6ms ping, 16mbps down, 5mbps up
Mine- 9ms ping, 16.5mbps down, 5mbps up

Not much difference there

Then maybe the problem is on Kaspersky's end.

Kaspersky

Why? Just use Windows Defender that's pre-installed

I don't understand why people are paying for virus protection software these days. Windows Defender works great and it isn't some bloated crap that you have to pay yearly to get the latest version.

Pay? Only suckers pay for virus protection. Every month or so, Kasperky, Norton, or AVG have full price mail in rebates from Newegg. I have Kaspersky Internet Security that is a full virus and internet protection program

$70 for free

ETA: but that is all besides the point of the thread

The source of the download may have more than one server with mirrors of the file to balance load, and it selected different servers for the downloads. You might've gotten lucky or your wife unlucky with server choice.

I'd try files from other sources as well to verify that it's really a problem.
