quote:I mostly agree with you but I was hoping this year would be more like 2001. The PS2 launched in the US in late 2000 and look at all the awesome games we got on it the following year. You also have representation for the Xbox and Gamecube in 2001 with Halo and Smash, respectively, which were the "killer apps" for those systems which launched that year.
It's not a strong year but I don't think that it's any worse than 2012 or 2006 (console generation first year like this )
Of course, games are more complex these days than they were then but it still makes for a disappointing year. The remakes of last year's games don't help matters, even if they are still fantastic games and their most recent incarnations are what they should have been to begin with.

I think it really comes down to that. 2015 looks good though right now. The remakes are getting old though. I don't mind them but I also don't need a remake for everything.

I say 1996, though '97 is a close second. The N64 release was mind blowing and '96 is the year we started seeing great PS1 games. Not to mention some awesome SNES games: Super Mario RPG, Kirby Super Star, and Harvest Moon)

'85.
Without 85, we don't get the other years IMO

I think we have so many remakes because when it comes to Playstation and Xbox there was backwards compatibility on the 360 and PS3. I don't mind the remakes if they are done well though like GTA 5 and The Last of Us.
I actually think GTA 5 needed a remake because the online has so much damn potential.
I'm not ashamed I'd buy a remastered Mass Effect collection if it was released on Xbox One in a heartbeat

Me too since I missed the series the first time

Competently agree

2004 was very solid.
Games that also need mentioning from that year:
Red Dead Revolver
Star Wars: Battlefront(probably my most played PS2 game...)
Metal Gear Solid 3
Metal Gear Solid gamecube remake
Sims 2
Rome: Total War
Katamari Damacy
KOTOR 2

While I didn't list them all, the years where the NES was undisputed king (1985 - 1990) was when many of the franchises that shaped gaming for the next decade and beyond were born, many of which we love to this day.
The Legend of Zelda ('87)
Megaman ('87)
Contra ('88)
Metal Gear ('88)
Ninja Gaiden ('89)
Nintendo's version of Tetris ('89)
Final Fantasy ('90)
And on PC you had these huge games:
The King's Quest series, The Ultima games, SimCity, and Wing Commander just to name a few.

How do you not have 2000 as a choice?
The Sims
Final Fantasy IX (greatest game ever made)
Vagrant Story
Majora's Mask
Perfect Dark
Deus Ex
Chrono Cross
Thief 2
Diablo 2
Counter-strike

Great thread! I'm partial to the late 90's bc of my age. The more I think about it the more I realize I'm pretty dumb lucky to experience the gaming industry at its peak.

I was trying to strike a balance between what I thought deserved to be in the list and what games this particular community would recognize and respect. Regardless, I've added 2000. It seemed like a crime not to have Deus Ex in the discussion. Counter-strike came out in 1999 and is represented in its year.

It's easy to quickly dismiss those games because of their simplicity compared to today's titles, but they were mind blowing in their own time. Some of them still hold up quite well today.

2001 or 2007 (with additions of Heavenly Sword and Folklore) for me.

socom 2 was also 04' I think. I spent at LEAST 500 hours on that game in high school.

I thought I'd do a quick (totally non-scientific) tally of which years got the most mentions in here. Top 3 years for gaming in the boards opinion were:
General consensus seems to be that the greatest period of gaming was 1996-1998.
Maybe I'll do this thread again later next year and will list the top 10 games (per Metacritic or Gamerankings) for every year, beginning in 1985. I'm aware the "votes" could have come out differently if more games and years were listed.
