seat belts - should this be considered a person's choice to wear one or not?

After a certain age, absolutely.

Eight people were in the car at the time of the wreck and six were ejected from the vehicle. The group was traveling from Texas to Walt Disney World in Florida for a family vacation.

That's horrific.

im not going to derail this thread about if we should\should not wear seatbelts.

I pray for the family and the three that survived. Unfortunately, though the driver survived, his life will be forever ruined and I hope he can seek help to cope with this tragedy.

Prayers!

Yeah, back when we didn't know any better. I remember our family road trips in our old Ford Escort (poor), and dad would fold the back seats down so the three kids could lay down their sleeping bags and sleep. Unheard of now.

I have an 8 year old and 10 month old. They may get fussy about being restrained, but in no way will I drive anywhere with them otherwise.

Same here. I remember riding from north Alabama to Orlando Florida in the backseat of my grandmother's 74 Buick Regal and the thought of a seat belt never entered anyone's mind.

But that was a different time and age. We've learned a lot about highway safety since then. Probably the biggest lesson we've learned is how wearing a seat belt vastly improves a person's chance at surviving a car accident.

$50 at the Motel 6, and they'd all be alive.

Stupid fricking cheap arse parents... couldn't buy a hotel room, couldn't take a second day off of work so they could overnight, instead of driving through the night...

Their family paid the ultimate price for their stupidity. They acted like it's a high school road trip, with so many kids in the car.

a 2005 tahoe could have a 3rd row, but that would mean the middle row was captains chairs, making it only have 7 seatbelts most likely since I don't think a tahoe with captains chairs in the middle would have a bench up front.

also there is no way that 8 people could fit luggage in a tahoe and themselve so they were likely pulling a trailer with the luggage. so driving at night, 16 years old, 8 people in the car, and possibly a trailer. great parenting there.

Dude it was 11. I do not agree with them letting a 16 year old drive that late, but whose to say that they didn't have reservations somewhere and were running a little late?

Just why.... why was the 16 year old inexperienced driver even behind the wheel? A road trip as long as this one is not meant for him to attempt learning... this is not fair

Imagine what it was like to be the emergency responders on this scene? I bet they have been shook to the core

Well the ages of the children killed were 4,7, and 15. I'm guessing the little girl, the boy with the A&M hat, and one of the other little boys were the victims.

Reading stuff about them and looking on their Facebook, looks like they were that typical always-traveling USSSA family

Really depressing

One of the worst experiences I have had as an ER physician was a similar accident on I75 near Gainesville, Fl were I was in residency. Family of 5, Mom, dad, kids ranging in age from 14 to 4...and a 6th passenger, the grandmother were headed to Disney World. They were in a suburban and had a blowout at 75mph. Vehicle rolled and ejected all but the mom and dad who were in the front seat wearing seatbelts. Of the 4 ejected, 3 were struck by other vehicles and killed. The suburban was hit by a semi and killed mom and dad. The only survivor was the 4yr old. He only had minor injuries. Medics were tore up over the scene...
Was awful...every member of this kid's family was dead. I will never forget that kid's face.
