We all thought there was no hope for the hipsters after Barcadia postponed their opening and Highland Coffee almost closing. Thankfully, enough Facebook protests and constant complaining, Highland was able to extend their lease. For now, hipsters have their haven and wait in anticipation for the opening of their skinny-jeaned mecca.

Ignore him. It is his schtick.

I've never seen someone jump at an opportunity to make fun of a group of people as much as he does

BR Barcadia as well as the revival of the Curbside truck now scheduled for January

As everyone speculated, this comes down to permitting delays. It's been said that the local politics surrounding that stuff are pretty bad. Can anyone speak to it?

Hopefully they can establish a better crowd than the one in New Orleans.

That whole area sucks. 2nd worst stretch in the city next to tourist Bourbon.

Barcadia, Lucy's, Republic, and Red Eye all blow

It's not the politics.

It's not knowing how to go about the permitting process if you have never done it before. It's quite a puzzle and not always an easy task to navigate and frankly the permit office (which I have dealt with a few times over the years) isn't the greatest help. Not really difficult but not always going out of their way either.

Restaurants have to satisfy a lot of people from health department, local permit office being building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical as well as state fire marshall as well as a few others. It's not an easy or quick task and if anyone tries to slip something past (which happens a lot) that just makes them look even harder.

If it's politics you know that up front from the very beginning and that is really rare. Normally that would be addressed before someone puts a bunch of money into a renovation ie...liquor permit, parking spaces, proper zoning etc...

Plus renovating an old existing piece of shite building/run down restaurant just normally takes twice as much time and money than anyone, especially a restaurant owner, would imagine.

Yes, the owners of some of Barcadia's biggest competition in the city are current (or former) city council members (Smokey Bourgeois, who owns George's (and is running for mayor), and John Delgado, who partially owns several bars Downtown including Huey's, The Draft House, and Brickyard South, formerly Mud and Water).

They have a lot of "stroke" in the area and a great vested interest in keeping Barcadia out. Heck, Smokey waged an all out war on food trucks several years ago when he was on the council, doing nearly everything possible to shut them down (thankfully, he failed, for the most part).

This is so funny to me for some reason.

It is the same way I felt when they did it with the food trucks. Barcadia wouldn't do anything at all to George's, Huey's, or Brickyard South.

I don't understand how they think having another option changes anything on the grand scale. Someone who wants to go to those places is already heading there. I mean, Barcadia isn't even in that area. How on earth would a bar on the north gates of campus affect something downtown or under the overpass?

Barcadia is going to catch a lot of Chimes runoff, college students who don't drive, and gameday people.

George's, currently, is the premier burger and beer joint in the city. If you were the owner of such an establishment, why would you want a similar place of business with more taps and better food opening up right down the road from you?

Remember, the bar/restaurant scene within a town is generally a zero sum game. There's only so much money that's going to be spent in bars and restaurants. If a new place is trying to set up shop that will poach your demographic or improve upon your business model, it is absolutely a threat.

Why would college students go downtown to the draft house when they could walk to Barcadia instead?
Why would 28 year old burger-loving beer mavens go to George's and drink Bud Lite when they can go to Barcadia and get Hopsecutioner?

It's simple survival of the fittest. If you can't beat them on an even playing field, uneven the field.

If this is where you are going for a burger and beer it's no wonder you bash the frick out of this place.

It's not really good for either.

Agreed, I boycot it out of hate for its owner.

FYI, George's is the reason I-10 goes to one lane East-bound off the bridge. Had there been another lane (as planned), Smokey would have had to move his bar. Since he had the stroke on the council, he was able to block that added lane so he wouldn't have to move George's.

I just don't think they're competition because I don't really know the last time I've heard or seen anyone mention going to George's. I know George's gets business from somewhere or it wouldn't be open, but I'm really unsure who.

As for downtown bars, Barcadia won't affect that. People don't go to downtown bars unless they're bar hopping specifically downtown on a Friday/Saturday night. We had the Draft House thread already, and most people agree that place isn't going to attract mavens making their way out there for beer.. it is going to catch people already downtown.

I don't find that Barcadia and downtown bars are anywhere near the same type of places. Women dress slutty and go downtown to dance and get drunk Men go downtown for those women. Barcadia is more of a "let's go out, but not do anything crazy" place.

Like I said, I see them getting people who aren't ready to go home after eating at Chimes, students who don't drive (that's what all north gate businesses get) and wouldn't be going downtown anyway, and fans on gamedays.

ETA: I realize you're just showing how he looks at it and not how you do. I just think it's a delusional way for him to look at it.

Well...no shite, Smokey and Delgado are in politics, a place where logic and action rarely coincide.
