If the government's going to make sure recipients of taxpayer-funded benefits are clean, the argument went, then why not also make sure the recipients of taxpayer salaries are clean, too?

In June, Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) made that very suggestion when he questioned why recipients of crop insurance and other government benefits weren't also targeted for drug tests like people on food stamps.

"Why don't we drug test all the members of Congress here," McGovern said shortly before the drug-testing measure passed. "Force everybody to go urinate in a cup or see whether or not anybody is on drugs? Maybe that will explain why some of these amendments are coming up or why some of the votes are turning out the way they are."

Radel apologized Tuesday for his cocaine bust and said he'd seek treatment.

"I struggle with the disease of alcoholism, and this led to an extremely irresponsible choice," he said.

Are you unable to see the difference between someone working for a living and someone asking for government money that might be used to fund their drug habit?

Haven't you posted this before?

Even if you haven't, it's old news.

shoot, test them too, I dont care. just dont hand out Taxpayer money like its candy. I get deeply offended when people sit out front of Walmart and offer me $100 in food stamps for 50 US Dollars.

What about farmers getting paid for not growing crops?

Either way, anybody getting taxpayer money should get tested. And I hardly call what Congress does 'working'.

Say what you want to about Congressmen but they had to go out campaign and win the votes. No one just handed them the job. Anyone is free to apply for that job.

This - If you are getting up, going to work everyday and performing your job duties as your employer expects than who cares what you are buying to put in your body.

Well, that's not the Congress or Senate.

I would think any employer would care that they have employed a coke head.

DUDE.

Old news, and everyone in DC laughed at Radel when he was stumping his idea.

It was not a secret that Radel loved the columbian snow. Easiest move the narcs in DC ever performed was getting that dude to buy from them.

Did he buy the cocaine with food stamps?

I don't give a shite if CNN caught him on camera snorting a line as long as a football field. That has NOTHING to do with the fact that foodstamp, welfare, medicaid, and disability recipients should have MANDATORY drug testing.

Anyone that disagrees with this is either a druggie themselves or a moron.

This statement drives me bananas, I love how recategorizing things as illnesses is this new fun way of taking away personal responsibility. Whatever happened to people just fricking up or being frick ups. Then he proceeds to following it up with another gem:

quote:

and this led to an extremely irresponsible choice

He didn't lead himself to the irresponsible choice...alcoholism did. Blame something else because you're not man enough to own up to things, that's what the world has come to.
