Basically every chest exercise besides bench press.

Ah ok, that works for me.

I'm on my way to the Val Kilmer beach body if I don't do something about it.

Full range of motion bench press wreaks havoc on the shoulders (rotators) - second only to wide grip behind the neck Lat Pull-downs.

I used to do half range of motion bench presses in a power rack and my BP went way up in a very short amount of time.

1) OP is probably right about guy being a blowhard but so what, guys in there getting after it.

2) There is a lot of benefit to keeping bar about an inch or 2 off your chest going down. Really not much chest benefit in that last 2 inches with extra stress on your shoulder. Being harder doesn't mean its hitting your chest any more than stopping. It does take extra muscle focus to stop it, keep it steady and begin lifting upwards. YOu are stopping your momentum with your own muscles, not chest.

3) All the guys who continuously bring up cross fit dudes are gym blow hards. These are your own kind that is embarrassing you, not crosffitters.

Depending on arm length, you arent supposed to touch the chest with the bar. It over extends the back and shoulders. Any personal trainer will tell you that.

I conveniently allow for my balls to slip out of my shorts when I do benches. So far, I have several dudes who offer to spot for me as soon as I walk in.

incorrect. weight training is very good for your bones and when done correctly is very good for your joints as well. your joints are under a lot less stress when your muscles are supporting them.

Just do cardio (I prefer non impact like cycling to preserve my knees and ankles), pushups, situps (and variety of core stuff), and lots of stretching and you will be healthier than any meathead at the gym.

static stretching is actually bad for you. large numbers of regular sit ups also are actually bad for your back. cardio is fine, but only improves your fitness in the endurance category. which is fine. and yes, you can do strength training with only bodyweight exercises, but pushups and situps don't really cover it. you're not doing anything to exercise your back or your legs. lifting weights certainly has a place in a well rounded exercise plan, again not by itself, but it's very good for you when form and functional strength is emphasized rather than getting big muscles.

This is one of them threads where OP wholeheartedly believes he knows what he's talking about, but is just way off. Can tell he's the type to bounce the bar off his chest with momentum.

I can tell you are one of those little men who lifts in the womans weight section.

Bouncing off the chest is dumb and dangerous. I never do this and advise against this. If bouncing off your sternum or going down 20% of the way down is the only way you can bench a certain wt it's better to decrease the weight. Better to have good form than to look like an idiot such as the guy benching in the OP.

I said bench press wasn't particularly healthy, not weight training.

Yes it is. I didn't say to do static stretching did I?

I clearly said situps and wide variety of core stuff. Also, I have a bad back and know damn well how to properly do core stuff to avoid back damage.

Its like you didn't read anything I wrote.

Yeah, I want to be rich. I don't give two dicks about being strong and impressing some dudes watching me at the gym instead of doing their own thing.

Nice post, though, Jung.

I'm 6'4" and go down to my chest. How low should I go if not to my chest?

I couldn't care less about what other people in the gym think nor do I watch their workouts. I enjoy lifting heavy and I'm good at it. Nice post yourself bud.

Your arms shouldn't break 90 degrees in the lowered position. If you have a really big chest the bar could touch because of body shape. I have a decent sized chest for my body size and the bar doesn't touch my chest doing bench. My friend is a bigger guy and the bar touches his chest when he does bench.

Seems like I would still be about a foot away from my chest(about the length from your elbow to your hand)
