I only bench on the universal machine.

I do it. I am sure I look like a fig pumping 100 lbs half way, but I have tendinitis in my left shoulder and left elbow, so I am not going to push it.

I love that little chest bounce!

Annoys the crap out of me when people don't go all the way down, and touch their chest.

On a flip side, back in the day, power lifters would do these 'half reps' with more weight than they usually would on occasion. It was to get there body and joints adjusted more to the heavier weight and in the long run allow them to build up to it faster as their bodies would become more comfortable with it.
We do this with boards these days. It's more or less a way to strengthen your lock out.

Let me guess, he was on the smith machine.
Then he started curling in the squat rack

Regular bench (to your chest)is way more damaging to the shoulder joint. I have my shoulder patients make sure that when they work chest they never let elbows go behind shoulders as its unsafe.
This
Plus bench press sucks anyway

Someone actually described this to me the other day as an effective way to increase your regular bench.
Half reps and quarter reps from the top? I never believed in them. The hard part is the first half of the exercise - from the chest (yes, touching, you pansies) to about 120 - 135 degrees of the elbow. Why you would want to train the easy part of an exercise to the detriment of the hard part is beyond me.
Ole boy would be better off doing dips at that point than half/quarter reps from the top.
These kids with their Crossfit and drugs...

For the ones trying to justify these bs half reps with power lifter point of views are kinda wrong. The power lifters do board presses and floor presses to help out their lock out on the top of the press. More or less strengthening the triceps.
The fella in the op is just flat out doing it wrong, try helping him out instead of laughing.

And why do people bench press?
Are you a body builder or something?
People in our generation will have the worst arthritis and muscle/ligament issues when we're old farts.

No man over the age of 35 should be bench pressing. High school is long over.

Out of curiosity, why all the hate for bench press?
Posted on 11/20/14 at 9:35 am to ctiger69
You're doing it wrong if you bounce the barbell off your chest. It's better to stop the weight and then push it up instead of using the momentum from your chest.

Squatting and every other form of strength training should be held off too right? Just stick to the elliptical and crunches old guys.
