The ballot initiative known as Measure 88 would have given four-year driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants “without requiring proof of legal presence in the United States” and died with a vote of 68 -33 percent.

Sir, here is what the American people want, since you're so into governing by fiat claiming that this is what the people want. Either that or you're a pathological liar.

To be fair, wouldn't the President's EO accomplish this? I thought the very idea was to grant "legal presence" for the 4 million in question.
I'm not pro this EO. But, it seems that the Oregon outcome is reasonable and the EO would grant SOME of the subject folks the very 'legal presence' that is important to the initiative.

This news is kind of old from a politics standpoint but I have thought about it a. It since the election.
I'm not sure I wouldn't support illegal immigrants getting a driver's license as long as it could be used for driving only. We have a lot of illegals driving in TX and the uninsured risk is real. I would like it to say "Not A Citizen" in huge red letters across the top and make it illegal to be used for using or obtaining any citizen rights.

Maybe, I don't really know. Is there already not a legal path for those 4 million to take to obtain "presence" already? I thought this is a measure to get rid of lap two and three and go straight to four in order to get that mile run in.

Areas outside of the Williamette valley in Oregon are very conservative.

Both senators and 4 out of 5 representatives are democrats.

I could go for this as long as an illegal knows the English language. I'd think reading road signs is imperative when driving.

That's because the liberal Willamette Valley is the most populated part of the state.

Come on now... Is it 7/8 of the population?

Well, I think they should have to pass the drivers test so that would likely be part of it.

Portland, Salem, Corvallis, Eugene.....the valley is bulk of the electorate.

This is where the Constitutional crisis comes in - BHP - not deporting them because you determine you can't is an executive decision based on resources:
"Okay - we don't deport unless they commit a crime."
But saying they're here "legally" when the statutes in place say they're not is rewriting the law.
That is what comes down when he gives them identification, entitlements, SSNs, etc.
That is the $hitstorm that is coming.

I said I was NOT "pro" this EO.
I was just pointing out that this Oregon result is not counter to the president's stated aim.

Right. So even in with MOST POPULATED part of the state being liberal, it didn't pass. If 90% lives in the liberal parts of the state, how did this not pass?
This wasn't an electoral style vote. It was a popular vote.
Surely a ton of liberals saw the stupidity of passing this law.

I like that the example ID is for the whitest guy ever. They have a lot of illegal Canadians sneaking into Oregon?

My theory:
1. 90% of the people live in a liberal part of the state, but far fewer than 90% of the state is liberal- especially on immigration.
2. Growing Hispanic population in the Willamette Valley along the liberal I-5 corridor, which is basically a bastion of "caucasasianaity"(I made up that word) and liberalism has raised awareness on the issues of illegal immigration....thus tying liberals there to reality.
3. Most conservatives and a significant number of liberals don't support it. This would never be popular in Bend or the conservative eastern part of the state even though they are least impacted.

That's exactly what happened. A critical number of them very clearly saw the problem. As I've said, the I-5 corridor has seen a boom in the Latino population over the past 20 years and people there are actually cognizant of the problems illegal immigration can cause. Liberal or conservative, they have exposure to problems with illegal immigrants and are thus tied to the reality of it.
