I mean........................knowing what we had coming back this season, did y'all really think that the team was gonna be that great this season? Honestly? With Ballard, they're a good........not great or elite.........team. Without her they're average at best. I think our guard rotation is good enough to match up with most of the teams in the SEC. I like the rotation of Moncrief, Ballard, and Harden.........with Deemer and Hill coming off the bench. But we're going to get killed in the post this season. This should not be a surprise knowing what we lost in the post and what we had coming back. Add into the fact, that we are replacing three starters who were seniors AND we're adding in all those new faces.

We're going to take some time to gel, not to mention having to work Ballard back in to the lineup. I would not expect this team to be able to really play good basketball till January. We don't have the talent to compete with the top four teams in the conference (USC, UT, TAMU, Kentucky) but, we'll have a chance of winning versus everyone else. Don't expect a repeat of the last two sweet sixteen teams though. Until we get some help in the post, that is just not foreseeable for this season.

This is going to be a long year. We simply can't make shots. Last night they dominated the offensive board. At one point they held position for almost 3 minutes straight with 4 consecutive offensive series and no points. They can't shoot free throws and they miss point blank lay-ups at the basket. I was happy with the Nikki hire. I thought she was a young coach with a great future but I am just not seeing it. The recruiting is very troubling. We have no early signees this year at all and are not even being mentioned by any of the top recruits this year that i have seen. They will hopefully improve, but the SEC schedule is going to be brutal based on what we're seeing so far.

no point guard to run the show and no "big" inside presence... guess that can be blamed on poor recruitng

You nailed it….and in my opinion there is no excuse for this.

I consider myself one of the more level-headed assessors of things around here….I am not one to immediately call for the firing of people after a couple of bad games and I like to see how things play out before I make a blanket assessment of the situation.

That having been said, one can look at this team and see that it is not loaded with a lot of pure talent. When Ballard returns, I think the other players around her will get better, but I look at it and wonder how many players on the current roster would be coveted by other top programs…and the answer scares me.

The only players on this roster that Geno Auriemma would even let inside his gym are Ballard and Moncrief. I think he would laugh if any of the others showed up looking for a tryout.

While comparisons to UConn might be unfair at this point, I don't think teams like Kentucky, S. Carolina, or Tennesseee would want anyone on this roster besides Ballard or Moncrief either. Hill, Pedersen and Boykin are all role players who should be getting about 10 minutes a game off the bench, yet two of them are starting.

The hope is that Ballard returns and Caldwell can mold the group that she has into a unit that presses a lot and gets tons of steals, which they are doing now, and also is able to function in the half court, which they are NOT doing right now. Maybe the style of play that this team will use will defy the lack of star power that they have. I fear that when conference play starts, however, that this team just won't be able to get it done. I am willing to be patient and let it play out….but I am very concerned.

Go ahead and put me on the "she isn't recruiting well enough" bandwagon.

You do realize LSU, and by extension students, donors, etc., are paying her $700K a year?

The coach can't recruit. Not nationally and not even when the best players are in her back yard. Bring back Pokey.

Thanks.

But seriously, if you read enough threads about women's sports, you will find certain irrational posters who want everyone from Caldwell to D-D Breaux to be fired immediately. I would like to think I am above that.

lol, but do have to say this, it's NC's 5th year, if she has a sub .500 in SEC this year and next, time to fire her IMHO....i'm fine with the $700 and support TAF and the program, it's what it costs to get a top coach, so if hshe is not winning soon, we will pay more..if we want a top program like we had 1999-2010ish...but hope we dont fall this far, I am VERY disapointed about us being so bad this year, but season is early and if she can get into NCAA's, that all good IMHO.

As for DD, last year was our best ever and while she aint my favorite person (and maybe least fav head coach in among the AD employees) if we have stuck with her this long, no reason to run her off....also fans have been supporting the team big time...

This thread title made me think you were talking about women's basketball in general.

And the answer to that is:

It was never good.

Actually only her 4th.

I said this before the season even started…ANY coach should get 5 years, regardless of sport. That gives the coach at least 4 full years with 2 classes of their own recruits. That is a fair amount of time to assess where the program is headed.

So far, the "eye test" indicates that the talent in the program now is less than the talent that she inherited. The challenge will be to see if she can take what she has and make a cohesive and effective unit out of it. 4 games into the season is not the time to call it a failure, but there is a cause for concern.

I wholeheartedly agree.

The recruiting is the MOST pressing issue right now. I really believe the problem with recruiting stems from her bringing Stacie Terry with her from UCLA. Terry was a known recruiter on the west coast and had many connections with the top high school programs out there (LB Poly, Mater Dei, Etiwanda, Winward, etc). She did not have many connections in the southeast or east coast. One thing that Pokey did do, was that she was a great recruiter, and had many connections throughout the southeast. When she became the head coach Carla Berry was able to carry that on. Nikki doesn't seem to have anyone on the staff who is a top recruiter. In the end it is THAT, which might be her undoing.

I agree in that we need to give her till the end of her contract before anyone talks of firing her. She's taken the program further than Van took it. So, there's already been an improvement. But, we can't have two straight sweet sixteen appearances followed by two really down seasons. Time will tell. I'm patient................
