quote:I disagree with Scruffy. Bama dropped to 4th after the LSU loss but returned to #2 just two weeks later and reestablished itself at that spot for the remaining 3 or so weeks. Okie Stat's loss happened the week after Bama's loss. You know how it works.
As someone said, if LSU would've won by 14 points, the rematch never would've happened, no matter how much better Bama was than the rest of the teams in the country.

They would not win their division (I assume the first tiebreaker is overall record) and would have two losses.

You would be wrong. Western Carolina doesn't change them winning their division or the conference. Now give your answer.
Well they still would have two losses, so yes. Of course.
OOOOOO you got me good. I'm so dum. Bama RULES ALL.

Yeah, I think that is a major reason why auto qualifying conference champions is a really bad way to go with an 8 team playoff.
You can have a team go 7-4 and win their division.
I suppose I knew that overall record wasn't a tiebreaker, I just had a herp-a-derp moment.

Which is why if MSU and Wisky have 2 and 3 losses, they would be SOMEWHAT equal to Ole Miss and Auburn having 3 and 4 (giving each an extra loss basically)
It's all fun to debate, but this is serious business to these conference leaders who have to figure out a way to get their conference champ in, and potentially give their 2nd best team a shot
Yeah, certainly millions of dollars difference.
I actually agree that the debate itself is enjoyable.
I also agree with you assertion that Wisconsin, Ole Miss, Mich St, Auburn are all fairly equal: very good teams that could beat anyone on their day and should merit a quality win.
However, I can't see any reason to not add LSU to that group as well (aside from intentionally diminishing Miss St's resume) since LSU is actually 2-1 against that group in three games.

Being shut out by the worst team in the division that hasn't won a conference game in two years might be a reason.

Because I'm intentionally leaving Minnesota off too. That's my only reason. Minny right now is ranked higher than LSU and is counting as a quality win for OSU. I don't think they are better than LSU so I'm leaving them out of the debate

So number of losses is most important to you. Back to BCS and schedule nobody. Sounds like an OSU fan wants OSU in the playoff every year because of a shitty conference. Congrats.

I'm not excusing an Ohio State loss to Va Tech, it was a bad loss. Ohio State was in striking distance with the ball down one score with 1 minute to play. They threw a pick 6. There are a bunch more excuses: 2nd youngest offensive line in the country, freshman QB starting for an injured 2 time Big Ten player of the Year, bear fron that our Oline had never heard of let alone seen, etc. That's all those are, excuses. Ohio State should have won all their games if they wanted to leave no doubt, but they didn't. Currently, they are trending as one of the top 4 teams in the country. Mississippi State is not. Neither is Florida State. The funniest thing about this all, is that if not for one call(which easily couldn't have been called), Florida State is out behind maybe even two loss Mississippi. That's how narrow the line is between these games. It's tough to get the best four teams, but I think that if we want to value all the games and performance of all the teams, then winning your division is not too much to ask. That's just my humble opinion.
It sounds to me that you want some set rules, that help your team more than others. And seems you don't mind injecting ridiculous opinion into the equation. Ohio State is trending up while Miss St is trending down? Because Miss St lost to the #1 team in the country? It's nobodies fault that they caught the #1 team so late, while Ohio State caught the vaunted Hokies early. What do trends of 1 loss teams have to do with anything?
And uh...get a new offensive line coach

quote:Correct. Conference championships refer to but a fraction of one's season. Why base playoff berths on part of the season when we have the whole season to which to refer?
Yeah, I think that is a major reason why auto qualifying conference champions is a really bad way to go with an 8 team playoff.

Absolutely.
They shouldn't have been there.
nonsense
they were the best team in CFB that year and it really wasnt even close.

Buckeyes fans argued to me on this board a couple weeks ago that SOS shouldn't count at all because Ohio State can't help it that some of their Big Ten opponents suck.

They should have beaten LSU at home then shouldn't they?
To me, 2011 was completely wrong. I think if LSU had lost 9-6 @ Bama, then LSU would have had a much better argument since they lost on the road and road games = 3 points in the NFL usually. Bama losing at home in November to me means there was a better team in their division by about 6 points (LSU won by 3 and Bama had a 3 point advantage).

Let me ask this because you run these numbers a lot. If Marshall had been Miss. St's first game of the year, and Miss St won, do they get "credit" for Marshall's other 8 wins in their SOS calculation? Is Marshall's conference equal to Miss. St's conference for record? Does SOS equate an 8-1 SEC team to an 8-1 MAC team on its face?
This is kind of a because it semi goes to the topic but doesn't apply this year too much I don't think

This is so bogus. The goal is to get the best 4 teams in the playoff, not the best 4 conference winners
There are over 120 teams in FBS, and 65 in the 5 major conferences (plus Notre Dame). There is a 12-game season in which teams play primarily just the teams in their conference and there is barely any cross-conference matchups between quality teams.
The idea you can rate two teams in different conferences with any degree of accuracy is insane. It's guesswork. The four "best" team argument is really just an argument for taking the team with the highest Q rating.

Do you think that a team that doesn't win it's division deserves a shot at a playoff?
That depends... Do you want the 4 best teams or 4 most deserving?

Those are subjective terms.

frickING FACEPALM
We'll never agree on this shite

Point me to a team better than Bama in 2011. Go on, I'll wait.
Obviously now it's easy to say that. Before the bowl games were played, LSU was better. They had a better resume and had already beaten Bama @ Bama.
That's like saying point me to a better team in 2002 than Ohio State. You can't since Ohio State won the National Title
