Cheap one at that. Must have a cd/write. Not into gaming. Used to play online . Any good sales going on?

Why is this important? They don't put them much in the low end laptops anymore but for $20-$40 you can get a drive that plugs into the USB port. I see 3 Windows laptops at BestBuy for $200 or less LINK

I am also looking for a new laptop also. 15.6" screen minimum, Windows 8.1, Office for work etc, with the ability and power to handle Autocad Civil 3D plus something that can also handle my son's online gaming. I have an 6 year old Lenovo which has done pretty well. Just wondering if there may be anything I should look at. HP is out, past customer sevice nightmares prevent me from even considering them. Would like to stay in ballpark of $1,000. I will also check with my company's IT guy for recommendations. He has pretty much built all of our office desktops.
TIA.

You won't get much better service from any of the others brands either, but it doesn't matter since HP doesn't make the sort of laptop you're after.

For a $999.99 laptop, you will not do better than this: LINK

Or you can build a faster desktop for the same price.

As for OP, walk into a Best Buy and pick a cheap one with at least 4GB of RAM.
