Let me preface by saying yes I know im asking this on the OT but I consider you guys family so I'm hoping for a few honest responses.

I've had some emotional issues from the past few years and my wife finally wanted me to go see a dr. Went for a first visit today and it went really well. After a 90 minute visit and lots of questions he said I'm the classic case of OCD.

He said I can do the Medicene route which he admitted works on only 50% of patients, or I can go the therapy route.

What experience do you have with either and if you've taken drugs for ocd, what was it?

He said if we did the medicine route, most likely it would be Paxil or Prozac

I have OCD. The real kind. Not the "I like my clothes hanging neatly OMG I'm so OCD!" kind. Meds.

I've used Effexor and Paxil. Both worked well. Supposedly cognitive therapy is the long-term answer; however, the drugs alone worked for me. Guess I didn't have a severe case of it. My OCD was related to recurring negative thoughts, which produced depressive effects.

ETA: Only stayed on the medicine for a few short months each stint. Haven't had the problem in any major way since.

I have severe OCD. Paxil and Prozac were nothing for me.

I've done both therapy and medicine. Therapy helps with techniques for monitoring thought process and or compulsions to help break cycles before they become uncontrollable.

Medicine does help. I took Paxil years ago. No experience with Prozac. Be sure to ask about sexual side effects.

Watch obsessed on A&E to see how therapy helps

I'm guessing that as with many disorders a combination of meds and therapy is the most effective

If you want this thread to continue, you need to improve the subject title of it. It's anchored.

Start with therapy if you've got the time and resources to pay for it. Nothing wrong with adding a med later. There's also nothing wrong with starting with a medicine and adding therapy if meds alone aren't cutting it.
