By looking at their first game, Texas Tech is playing A LOT of 6'3-ish guards.

6'3 FR. Williams
6'3 FR. Evans
6'3 JR. Gotcher
6'3 SO. Onwuasor (we recruited this guy)
6'3 SR. Turner

All received 16 minutes or more of time in their first game.

Only 1 guy above 6'3 got 18 minutes or more in:

6'9 FR. Odiase (this guy is huge, 265 pounds)

Rounding out their rotation:

6'9 SR. Lammert - 7 minutes in game 1
6'8 SO. Foster - 13 minutes in game 1
6'5 FR. Gray - 15 minutes in game 1
6'10 FR. Manderson - 14 minutes in game 1
6'8 FR. Smith - 17 minutes in game 1

As you can tell, TTU is a VERY VERY young team. They just brought in 7 new players this season with 6 of them expecting to be significant contributors. What else can be taken away from TTU? They are a guard oriented team, period. The only scoring option they have in the front court is Odiase who is a true freshman, but a big one at 6'9 265. This will be a key matchup for Big E...as Martin and Mickey simply wont be able to guard this guy under the basket with his size.

Odiase dropped 16 points in their first game and the rest of their PF/C combined to add in 5 points total. The guards do the scoring in Williams, Evans, Gotcher, Onwuasor and Turner. If we can put a plug on Odiase inside, it will force their guards to literally do all their scoring because their other big men simply aren't threats. If Odiase can control the paint, it will force us to leave guards open at times which could cause big problems for us.

Bottom line, this TTU team is very young, not very talented, but does create a problem for us if Odiase is not contained inside. Odiase was 5 for 11 in his first game along with 6 for 8 from the line dropping a game best 16 points. He also grabbed 10 boards and had 3 blocks. He is the key to not only beating TTU, but creating a game where we could run away with it.

i wonder if we play a lot of zone. The two big men for Gardner-Webb owned our guys because they were too physical for them. They werent even that tall. We had to go zone, and it worked.

Sort of alarming though how badly we got owned in man to man. I'm sure he'll want to start in it again and see if we can do better. But if Odiase has his way like the Gardner-Webb frontcourt did I won't be surprised if he quickly switches to zone.

This made me realize how much we are going to miss JOB on the defensive side of the court. Mickey is great when he is playing backside defense. Mickey on the other teams best post player, not so good.

Yeah Mickey is a pretty bad defender. People think about his blocks and that = good defender to some.

But he really struggles.

They will start some taller guys, but they will end up subbing out and going small similarly to LSU, but we do it with guys who are 6'5" (Quarterman) or 6'9" (Epps)

They only shot 40% from inside the three point arc, so I think we go with man to man. They did hit 38% of their three point attempts, which would be a disaster for LSU to be in a zone if Tech can hit three's. GW had so many open three attempts while LSU was in the zone, but they just didn't hit them.

Texas Tech also gave up 47% from three point range, but were very stiffling inside defending giving up 25.8% from inside... Could mean they give the 3 point shot up and pack it in. LSU will need to hit some three's to open up Tech's defense.

Speaking of which he's struggled as a starter in his first 2 games OK ST. Typical "cant get anything offensively" going...then one night he'll drop 16-18 points.

I am also following Tyree Griffin there...dude has had 2 nice games to start his career there.

Craig Victor simply isn't playing at 'Zona (shocker there). Jordan Cornish hasn't played much either at UNLV. Dominic Magee hasn't played yet as Memphis hasn't started their season.

Damian Jones completely dominated in Vandy's first game but was against a team I've literally never heard of.

Rico Gathers looked decent against McNeese and Deng Deng unfortunately looked like an absolute beast in just 16 minutes (16 points on 8 of 9 shooting, 3 boards, 2 blocks, 1 assist, 1 steal)

Martin was 1 of 7 from 3 against G-W. I expect him to hit a couple more this game.

It was cringeworthy to watch in person. He needs serious work. The guy was shorter than him, maybe outweighed him by 10-15 pounds and straight up dominated him every time down the court. No effort to deny the ball or get in his shirt at all. In addition to that, there was no attempt to help him at all.

I am a little worried about our defensive play after the first two games. A few things I saw;

1. Elbert Robinson would come to the top of the key to guard their big man and that would open up the zone to everything.
2. Mickey and Martin didn't play very physical down low and got backed down to the basket a bunch.
3. Gray and Hornsby over-pursued and took themselves out of the play a lot early in the game.

That said the team seemed to do really well playing zone. However, the way we closed the game was a little sloppy and we need to improve on that. Other than that I think this team has a lot of potential. Once Hornsby gets comfortable he looks like he will be a big contributer. But good grief I hate that shot .

I haven't seen TTU play or know anything about them, but they look really young. They may be on the same level as us as far still trying to mesh as a team with all new faces. Hopefully Mickey and Martin can play big for us and we can come out with a win.

Well, since Jennings doesn't play basketball, I think the odds of our scoring more points than TTech is in our favor.
