I'm in my 20s so this situation was already gone before I came into adulthood, but obviously the phrase itself still lives on. How did things go down..like after/while you were being fired when exactly did a pink piece of paper enter in?

My cousin was fired from a job last month and received a "pink slip"
I've never seen one before then.

but what is the process? And what is on the pink slip? Is it basically just a termination letter that is on pink paper?

When I got laid off; I got a "pink slip". It's just a carbon copy of the original slip.

It's paperwork from the old carbon copy days. Three copies: original, employee copy (pink), and company copy (yellow).

Another possible etymology is that many applications (including termination papers) are done in triplicate form, with each copy on a different color of paper, one of which is typically pink.
