870 AM has to have one of the strongest signals in the nation.

I could hear slight mumbling and I was able to make out enough to tell it was 870 radio in Madison, FL. That is about 40 miles east of Tallahassee.
I could catch the Saints game loud and clear right about 40 miles west of Tallahassee today.
If there is another radio station as powerful I don't know of it in the south.

The big AM stations all have big signals. KOA in Denver comes in pretty strong in Louisiana, as does KDKA from Pittsburg.
WWL used to have an overnight show aimed at truckers for this reason. They were also owned by Loyola University at one time (hence the "L" in the call sign). That didn't stop them from selling air time to protestant radio preachers, many of whom were virulently anti-Catholic. Business is business.

It's a 50kw clear channel station. No other broadcasters share 870 on the dial.
On a cloudy night when atmospheric conditions are right, it can be picked up as far north as Wisconsin.

Too bad wwl is terrible now

It's 50,000 watts. There are a lot of radio stations that are 50,000 watts and I think that's the most powerful allowed.
However, wwl is one of a handful of stations in the country that in the infancy of radio was granted clear channel status. What that means is, all other stations in its region that are near it on the dial have to significantly reduce the power of their broadcast signal at sundown and, therefore, wwl comes in rather clearly for several hundred miles.

870 is strong as hell and can be heard pretty much all the way up the mississippi river valley at night...
I don't listen to it much because the quality of AM just sucks, but it is really cool to hear a local radio station from home when you get ready to listen...
