I'm against the whole McDonalds Coffee burnt me crowd. It was an aftermarket addition and you can't sue the mfg.....except in America, I 'spose.

quote:

An attorney in Virginia preparing a lawsuit that they will likely file against Kel-Tec and ProMag Industries.

It appears that their client was shooting a Kel-Tec KSG equipped with a ProMag "Archangel" polymer forward grip when tragedy occurred.

Keep in mind the KSG is a bullpup 12 gauge, with a total length of only 26 inches.

"The properly installed forward grip slid off the gun rail while the user was ksgpumping the gun, resulting in the user shooting off part of his hand," the attorney wrote on a lawyers-only site.

The attorney was seeking advice and technical experts for the lawsuit. A friend saw the post and sent it to me.

A contact wound with a 12 gauge is devastating. There's no coming back from something like that.

The attorney cites the compact nature of the KSG, and the fact there is nothing on the rail to "prevent the grip from sliding off."

They also noted alleged problems with the forward grip: "Nothing but a polymer nipple secures this grip to the rail -- this nipple partially sheared off during first use."

My thoughts on the KSG are mixed.

I think it's an intriguing design, but it suffers from Kel-Tec's poor quality control.

Some KSGs run like sewing machines, but some shooters have complained about serious, potentially fight-stopping FTEs and FTFs with their KSGs. The model I shot functioned flawlessly, however it was not nearly as smooth as other pump guns.

The polymer rail on the pump concerns me too.

And then there's the price, an MSRP of $990, which equates to about two 870s.

If you shoot one, please be careful.

I traded mine for a paddle board. It was fun to shoot and it worked flawlessly. I didn't have a forward grip on it. it's very easy to short stroke until you get used to it.

I feel bad the guy lost part of his hand but I really don't think a lawsuit is needed. (Rarely do I) did he install the grip himself? How do we know it was installed "properly"? Is he a professional gunsmith? What's his experience with firearms? These are questions the defendant's attorney will be asking I'm sure.

Why did you trade it?

Just curious. Also, have the quality issues gone away for keltec? The KSG can only get better.

I also agree. It's after market and the shooter must've been racking a bit too hard.

MSRP on the board I traded for and the carbon fiber paddle is 2 1/2 times what the KSG was.

A friend of mine is a distributor for BOTE boards and he's wanted my KSG since I got it. It was nice gun for the collection and fun to shoot but Ive been wanting a paddle board for the kids for a while. Coincedently (wink), the board I got happens to be an angler model.

My best time was 15 rounds of buck shot in a little better than nine seconds (that includes the time to switch tubes). If that guy was trying that with a forward grip then I can see how shooting your hand off could happen. As I said before, it's easy to short stroke the pump if you're not used to it.

People always jump to blame the manufacturer when they do stupid crap.

I'm sorry his hand is blown off but I just can't feel sympathy for him. Your hand should never go in front of the barrel for any reason. If you do not have experience with bullpups, then don't try to speed shoot a bullpup.

I personally know that I've shot exactly 0 bullpups. For me to go to the range and pretend I can speed shoot one is just asking for an accident like this to happen.

Sorry for the dude's hand but this sue-happy society we live in will be the death of us.

Experts are going to shred this guy in court.

Those registers that make up the 1919-rail standard are the prevention.

Probably because that isn't what that grip is designed to do.

Agreed 100%.

I can't sue Nissan because I put some sporty tires on my car, then raced around town and smashed into a building.

I bet that depends on which atty is speaking. Did that stand out to anyone else?

EDIT: I see DLauw commented on it.

Will be interesting. Typically in products liability cases, the jury is asked to balance the utility of the manufactured good vs. the danger. What's the utility of this gun?

To protect yourself and home.........but obviously not to protect one's hand from his own inexperience.
