You could prune them back now and wait for new spring growth. After they start leafing again, you can then apply neem oil to the leaves. It can also help if you remove the compost under the plants created from their own leaves and replace it with something else like pecan or oak leaves that will eventually break down. I've got about three hundred azaleas on my property and haven't had to deal with this issue too much since I prune them every couple of years and burn underneath.

If it's a black scale it's a fungus and you should dig them out of the ground and throw them away before it spreads to others.

If not treat them with Merit, it's a powerful insecticide. It's poisonous so be smart about handling it.

With no pics I don't have much to go on, just trying to help out.

Excellent product. Lowest cost imidacloprid I have found and made in Louisiana. Apply once a year in a drench around the roots. Great for crepe myrtles and gardenias too.

Call Johnny Naylor at Naylors Hardware in BR and email him that pick. He is the only person I listen to regarding these items and most in BR would agree.

If you prune now they will not bloom or will be very spotty. Only prune azaleas just after the flowers are gone in the spring.

That is lace bugs. Pretty bad case. DO NOT PRUNE NOW! Wait for bloom in spring. After they bloom, azaleas will drop leaves and new growth comes out. Prune and fertilize then. When new growth starts it will be unaffected.

You have 2 choices then. Routine spraying with an insecticide that kills lace bugs (every 2 weeks). Or use a granular insecticide that absorbs the insecticide through the roots. This is a simpler choice and what I do. I use the product made by fertilome which is an azalea fertilizer with insecticide added. Available at nurseries and hardware stores.

Leaves that look like yours will never change back to green. You goal is to protect new growth in the spring.
