The federal government has invested over $10 million developing and promoting a video game about a young teen that must escape a town full of fat people, as a method to fight obesity.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) paid for the development of two video games that promote healthier eating, including “Escape from Diab,” a “nightmare” fictional city where people are only allowed to eat junk food
WTF

I would like to think there is a good explanation for this...

After completing the games they were tested on about 100 kids aged 10 to 12. Results of the study found that children increased the amount of fruits and vegetables they eat by 0.67 servings, but that playing a video game did not increase their physical activity levels.
Looks like its partially working.

No shite Dick Tracy...our Gov't is so stupid

Even so, it doesn't strike me as a worthwhile pursuit or subject of study. I can see paying money (not 10 million) to study the effects, but not to develop the game itself.

So says the people who spent the 10 million? Hmmm.

And when the gov is told to reduce the budget by 10%, all departments and agencies will just cut back 10% across the board which will lead to elimination of things like travel and training, instead of just eliminating non-valuable programs.
So the end result is an inadequately trained and thus effective government, that still has non-valuable/wasteful programs.

why didn't they just design it for physical activity with the Wii or Kinect?

Whoever comes up with these ideas is a complete fricking idiot though.
What moron thought that this was a good idea?

A video game that can make kids less fat?
How is that a bad idea?

The one that got the US taxpayers to pay for it

Looks to me like they are just eating more food.

Yea good idea. Let all the dept heads just skip right over waste, redundancy, and fraud and go straight to getting rid of the things that work.
I would hope we have better dept heads than that. Or we can all panic over the thought of 10% cuts thus never doing them.

Fair enough but the game didn't exist yet so they couldn't do the study without it.
This seems like information private developers will find useful, too. If you can make fat kids less fat with a video game, maybe you can get a 2 year old to stop randomly screaming at the top of his lungs with a video game? I'd buy two copies of that one!

I'd worry more about the people approving the funding

The end result is fighting obesity and Type 2 diabetes. If spending $10 million on a game promoting healthy eating could influence children enough to reduce the problem by 1% it would be money well spent regardless of how silly you think it sounds.
It does make a lot more sense to develop one for the Wii or with some sort of motion / exercise built in. Probably would up the costs to $50 million though.
