For years, boys and girls at South Arbor Charter Academy have been inspired by Heroes Hall – a corridor featuring murals that honored the Space Shuttle Columbia astronauts, Mother Teresa, Betsy Ross and Albert Einstein.

But many parents are furious after the principal had the murals replaced with paintings honoring President Obama, J.K. Rowling and Oprah.

“This is no longer a hall of heroes,” parent Craig Bergman told me. “Now we have a hall of celebrities.”

The original mural had been a part of the Michigan charter school for years. It included a diverse group of national and global “heroes” – from Gandhi to the astronauts who were killed when the Space Shuttle Columbia exploded over Texas.

Those images were replaced with President Obama, Oprah, Maya Angelou, "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling and Walt Disney.

So what the heck is going on here? Why did the South Arbor Charter Academy remove a mural memorializing the fallen Columbia astronauts and replace it with one honoring President Obama?

School spokesperson Jennifer Hoff said it was part of an intentional shift from “historical heroes” to “modern-day heroes.”

“Heroes Hall has been a part of the school’s fabric for years,” she said. “In fact, the old mural had been on the wall for at least 11 years. As with all things over time, it was showing its age from the activities of being an active school and needed some repair.”

That's dumb, but at least no one is forced to go there.

Isn't the inclusion of heroic oprah sending the wrong message about obesity?

Where is the problem?

Barack Obama murals are in charter schools everywhere in America.

Whether you guys like the president or not, he is a great model for black male achievement and a full embodiment of the American Dream.

Anything is possible. You guys should want those young males to try to work as hard as Barack did.

Could someone please explain why Oprah and Obama have "hero" status? Did they save baby seals or something?

A failed, lawless, anti-American president shouldn't be in any hall of honor, but those others are giants of business and literature, and deserve a place. The "replacement" part of the story is a little unsettling, though.

"A shift to modern-day heroes."

Might as well laugh, I guess. I mean, what's the point of one more post regarding the left-wing agenda of the NEA and the other people who control today's educational system? By now, people either get it or they don't.

Because they are epitome of the America Dream.

They are positive images for black boys and girls, because of their stature, stories and success.

We can exclude his governing

Didn't Disney die over fifty years ago? How is he more of a modern hero than Gandhi or Mother Theresa? Not that doing modern day heroes is a bad idea, but it's inconsistent with his choices.

Libs have long called him a racist, misogynist and anti semite. Now he's a hero alongside other heroes like oprah.

While there is some truth to that, I do have a problem with deifying a current political leader strictly for the purpose of indoctrinization, which is what its really about.
