apple tv not picking up on computer

My apple TV isnt working. WHen I turn it on my tv, it says connect to iTunes. When I plug it into my computer, it isnt picking it up. Helpppp

I don't think you're understanding the message right, you shouldn't need to hook the AppleTV directly to a computer. Just set up a wireless or wired connection and log in using your AppleID

Physically connect AppleTV to TV; wirelessly to Internet. Connect laptop to Internet on the same wireless internet. Start iTunes.

How would one even plug an AppleTV into a computer?

When AppleTV has a firmware issue it can't resolve itself, you have to connect it to a computer to install the firmware through itunes. AppleTVs have microUSB ports, so you can hook it up to a USB port.
If iTunes isn't detecting the AppleTV, take it to an Apple store and see if they can do it there.
This is what you are suppose to do:

If you have a 3rd gen, make sure you are using the micro USB and the power cable to power up the AppleTV.
