WHAT IS SERIAL?
Serial is a new podcast from the creators of This American Life, hosted by Sarah Koenig. Serial will follow one story - a true story - over the course of a whole season. We'll follow the plot and characters wherever they take us and we won’t know what happens at the end of the story until we get there, not long before you get there with us. Each week we'll bring you the latest chapter, so it's important to listen in order, starting with Episode 1. If you need help knowing how podcasts work and how you get one, watch our tutorial.

SEASON ONE
On January 13, 1999, a girl named Hae Min Lee, a senior at Woodlawn High School in Baltimore County, Maryland, disappeared. A month later, her body turned up in a city park. She'd been strangled. Her 17-year-old ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was arrested for the crime, and within a year, he was convicted and sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison. The case against him was largely based on the story of one witness, Adnan’s friend Jay, who testified that he helped Adnan bury Hae's body. But Adnan has always maintained he had nothing to do with Hae’s death. Some people believe he’s telling the truth. Many others don’t.
Sarah Koenig, who hosts Serial, first learned about this case more than a year ago. In the months since, she's been sorting through box after box (after box) of LEGAL DOCUMENTS and investigators' notes, listening to trial testimony and police interrogations, and talking to everyone she can find who remembers what happened between Adnan Syed and Hae Min Lee fifteen years ago. What she realized is that the trial covered up a far more complicated story, which neither the jury nor the public got to hear. The high school scene, the shifting statements to police, the prejudices, the sketchy alibis, the scant forensic evidence - all of it leads back to the most basic questions: How can you know a person’s character? How can you tell what they’re capable of? In Season One of Serial, she looks for answers.

Well what do you think?
I want jay to be guilty
I want jay to be guilty

I want him to be guilty too but I don't think it will be that easy

I don't know what to think anymore. It would have been nice for us to actually hear Jay's conversation with SK.
Also, I was pissed to find out that Jay just walked away from being an accessory to the crime.

I just learned about this podcast this morning and I've listened to all of it and read a lot
I don't think we find out anything
But jay is such a fricking liar

im pretty sucked into this. i think it's pretty clear that the resolution will be disappointing because of what people seem to expect. everyone is going to always want to know what really happened, and that is clearly impossible.
i have no emotional investment in whether any specific person is guilty or innocent at this point. i just wanna know what happened. sucks that that's not possible.
i also think that this sarah chick is weirdly into adnan. some awkward moments related to that.

Yeah that was fricked up
But I really have a problem with the cell tower pinging not matching up with anywhere jay said he was when those calls came in or were made

Yeah she seems to have a crush on him
But she also seems to sway toward him being guilty a lot

You should download the Slate Magazine "Podcast about the Podcast". SK reveals that we may get between 12-15 episode for S1.
I don't know what to think about Jay. On one hand, I think he's a piece of s*** liar who is sketchy as f***. Also, his "Woodlawn's criminal element" statement is weak. But in the other hand, I'm waiting for Adnan to slip up or finally tell SK something she doesn't know.

quote:I think she's sucked into his "charm" and wants to believe that he's innocent. I'll admit that from episode 1 to episode 4. I believed that Adnan was innocent and that two people put this crime on him [That anonymous call is a huge key to this case]. From episode 5 until the last, I've been on the fence.

Why are you censoring yourself?
I forgot I subscribed to the slate podcast. I'll go listen to it now. Seems like they only covered eps 4-6?
This is actually my first foray into to podcasts and I have seriously been missing out. I went to the top ones today and subscribed to so many. Why hasn't anyone told me podcasts are cool? I make fun of slow every time he tells me he's listening to a podcast

I think jay is the sociopath

As of right now... Adnan is so fricking guilty.

Today's episode further's my belief that Adnon is actually guilty but also that Jay was involved in a much deeper way.
I don't buy Adnon's story that he doesn't remember anything about that day even though the cops called him looking for his ex gf. If the cops called me about a missing person I would remember EVERYTHING about that day.

Also, I don't think there's going to be a definitive answer to all of this.

What. The. frick.
Are you serious? How? Jay is a lying pos. None of the cell tower pings match up with where he said they were

I agree with that, hendo
And les BFF, you're right about it being odd that he doesn't remember the day when his recently made ex gf came up missing and the cops called him

quote:Well from what I've been reading in the media. This is the first podcast of it's kind. "This American Life" & "Radiolab" are other podcast produced by the same people who created "Serial".

yup. that part is total bullshite. he keeps saying that there was nothing memorable or weird about that day.
dude the fricking cops called you WHILE YOU WERE HIGH about your missing ex-gf that you talked to hours previously. if that story ends with them finding Hae hours later unharmed, he is still telling that story today and remembering it perfectly.
turns out that story ends with her missing for weeks and ending up murdered. you are not forgetting a single thing about that day.
