So I'm a little late to the game but I'm finally upgrading my HD to an SSD.

I've heard several different things about what to install on the SSD.

Install windows on SSD, right? What else? Programs and games? Do i just save my other HD for documents and photos and everything else on the SSD? Thanks.

How big is the SSD and what do you do on your computer?

The priority is:

1. OS
2. Core programs that you launch all the time, like browsers and photoshop and whatnot
3. All other programs
4. Games

Generally the static media files like documents, photos, videos, etc. will stay on a storage HDD unless you have the space.

However, if you do specialized work like video editing and 3d modeling, a lot of people store their ongoing projects on the SSD for fast loading, or they use it as a scratch disk for photoshop/premier/etc if they don't have a lot of RAM.

128GB

Mostly just an internet browser but i do dabble in gaming. I like to stream video while I browse the internet with dual monitors as well.

I've noticed pretty severe delays launching programs recently and the HD is definitely the weak link on my computer.

Cool.

Rookie question incoming...

So when I first install this thing, how do I go about it? Do I wipe windows from my old HD first and then do a fresh install to the SSD?

In that case, you'll be looking at OS and probably all of your non-gaming software. Maybe room for a game or two. When space is a limitation, games usually have to go on the slow hard drive. It won't decrease performance. You'll just have longer load times. If I recall correctly, when I had a 128GB I was able to store all my software plus Skyrim (which benefits heavily from an SSD). Slowly I've worked my way up to a 500GB SSD, price being the only thing that's kept me from more.

Depends on how old (and clean) your existing OS installation is. If you're confident that it's free of all malware and uncluttered (Windows still starts reasonably fast), you could clone your HDD to the SSD using Macrium reflect. This would require you to move media files and such to make sure the HDD doesn't have more data than the SSD can hold obviously.

Otherwise, a fresh install is always better. It's just more work to reinstall drivers and programs and get your settings back to the way you like.

I'll just move everything that I don't want on the SSD to an external hard drive and then clone to the SSD. That'll work eh?

Then do I remove windows from the other HDD?

Yeah, once you've verified the SSD boots and everything is working. Then I'd redirect your libraries to from C: to your HDD.
