Les Miles and the school of Bo

I posted this in reply in another thread but wanted to expand upon it in reply to numerous threads I am reading about Mile's offensive philosophy.
Les Miles graduated from the school of Bo Schembechler. He played for him and coached with him. Bo's philosophy was the same. I once read that he thought passing was "unfair." Schembechler learned from coaching under Woody Hayes, who
I for one find the style entertaining. Also, I don't understand the complaints about it now because it's nothing new at LSU. We won a National Championship with this same style in 2007, and nearly another in 2011. Matt Flynn was decent, but players like Jacob Hester, IMO, were more important that year. In 2011 we got to the National Championship with Jarret Lee and Jordan Jefferson. Jarret Lee and Jordan Jefferson! With a different officiating crew, we beat Alabama in 2014.
Mile's style is to control the clock and line both offensively and defensively. Keep your defense fresh; wear theirs out. In my opinion, this is better than an air attack and can win national championships year in and year out with proper execution.
Nick Saban was asked about LSU's "old school" offense during College Game Day on Saturday and he was quick to tell the reporter "LSU is built the same way we are."
Be patient and let the man work.
But that's just my humble opinion.

embraced the run, eschewed the pass, and demanded tough, physical play from his linemen. Rather than innovation, Hayes stressed repetition—he wanted his players to run each play flawlessly. Over the next forty years, Hayes' impact on his young protege was clearly evident. Schembechler's teams at Michigan were molded in the spirit of Hayes' Ohio State teams.

The style isn't the issue. The issue is the imbalance created by the fact that we don't have a quarterback that can complete anything but low percentage down the field throws. Running it 70 percent of the time is about 10 percent too much for even this system.

it's the easiest (and most effective) refrain. Bama is basically the same as us. we use a fullback and thye use tight ends more but that's scheme. philosphy is the same. defense and ball control. limit mistakes. wear down the other team.

Our Qb and wr's were a threat. This offense has gone into a shell compared to the 2007 offense.

I thought his OSU teams had more of a passing attack

I never really thought of Matt Flynn as a threat but I do agree he was more talented at that point in his career. We, no doubt, need talent in that position to make even the running game work, but I still think we need to be patient with our young QBs. Give them the spring and summer to improve and lets test them out again next season. I expect great things both offensively and defensively next year starting with a win over Mississippi State in Starkville that will have this board singing praises to Miles and Co.

The last few games vs bama in years without Mett as QB, the philosophy is this: Run the ball almost exclusively with minimal low-risk passing attempts. Play lock down defense. Keep game close until late and hopefully squeak out a win.
However, even throwing more with Mett didn't yield a win. We've beat bama once in last 5 tries and that came in OT.

I agree, we were extremely effective last year with a 60-40 ratio.
But i think we are turtling up this year, and protecting the young QBs from Jarrett lee like pressure that could ruin them.

Wasn't LSU in the top 50 in passing attempts in 2007? I don't think any of our recents teams have even approached that mark.

Les miles 25-1 after a loss. Wow. Only has lost back to back games once in 10 years

I don't think they aren't a threat b/c of talent...i think its because the coaches refuse to make it part of the offense.
Jennings has proven he is capable of throwing on the run. How often do we see his number called to roll out and have the run/pass option? It makes the game simpler for a qb who may not be good at reading defenses (I always hear this but still think its bs) and puts some pressure on the edge of the defense.

I heard that Cam worked with Jennings extensively over the last couple of weeks on reading the defense, and taking the option when open. He failed to do this on the last play of the game in OT. Had running room, probably could have picked up a first, but didn't see it. That's not coaching, that's experience. He'll have more of both by fall 2015.

I heard that they used to drop kick for PATs and FGs too.

But JJ didn't have Cam. Look what he did with Metterberger in one off-season.
