Should you create a will for your pets?

Friend died unexpectedly last weekend. Not a close friend, just a friend. However, she left some dogs behind. Now everyone is trying to figure out what to do with them, do they stay together, and all that jazz.

Made me think of what would happen to my two if I got in a wreck tomorrow and was killed. Where would they go? One has a severe food allergy and can only eat two types of dog food. One is deaf but knows hand signals. In other words, they have their quirks. How many people actually write down where they want their dogs to go and and include the pertinent info such as vets, health history, etc? Think I'm going to write that down and give it to a family member this week.

I would have my parents' cats. My parents would have mine. My sister's would go to my parents first...me second.

If we all bought it at the same time - That's a helluva good question.

Wouldn't be a bad idea. Maybe discuss arrangements with whoever you decide to leave them with so they're not all like WTF when you go. Otherwise they might meet a needle.

Nobody wants your goldfish and ferret anyway bruh.

The ferret scratches too much and the goldfish is anti-Semitic.

I've had several dogs given to me because the owner died and no one wanted to be bothered. I found good homes for them all.

That would be including them in your will with specific instructions, not creating a will for your pets. Sounds like a smart thing to do though.

When my father died and we got to look at his will it was made out where the first person in the list that was still alive got 100% and this was the order: My mother, me and my sister(split 50/50 if we both were alive), and 3rd was to the XXXXX's,<-our last names, pets. So basically if we had all died at the same time in a car crash the way my dad had it set up where it would have made our one dog and one cat millionaires!

My will just states to chunk my dog in the fire if something happens to me. Life shouldn't be worth living anymore without me and all.

Some states allow you to even establish a pet trust. Louisiana does not though.

Thats fricked up! TBH when I heard that when they were reading my dads will I started busting up laughing like a kid in sex-ed class who isn't supposed to laugh but can't help it. Its one of the few things I can remember clearly from that time and I cherish it!

I know it's messed up, but I'll need something to play with in Heaven after all.

At least they wouldn't piss it away on booze and drugs.

On first glance, I was going to laugh at all this, but it actually makes sense.

Of course it makes sense. You make arrangements for everything else. If your pets have meaning to you, why wouldn't you want to ensure they are cared for when you're gone? Especially if you own something like a horse, pig, or exotic animal.
