While I don't condone the activities of the American Mafia, or as it's more commonly called, La Cosa Nostra, I've always been interested in learning about the Mafia and the different families/legendary gangsters. I credit the Sopranos for kick-starting this interest, and I definitely consider myself a mob historian, I've watched a bunch of documentaries and read a ton of books about the mob.

One city whose resident La Cosa Nostra family seems to be almost non-existent is our very own New Orleans. New Orleans was a big-time mob city back in the day, and legendary mob boss Carlos Marcello ran things for a long time. But since he died, the mob in New Orleans seems to have all but disappeared. When I search for the Mafia in New Orleans, one name comes up consistently, a guy by the name of Michael Tufaro, and supposedly he is trying to rebuild La Cosa Nostra in New Orleans, with some other confirmed made members.

Anybody else know anything about this mysterious mob family in New Orleans?

Because this CSB will likely interest you. I remember as a kid eating at Sal and Judys one night and there was a guy at the bar flanked by two Italian linebackers in suits. Toward the end of the meal we all realized it was Carlos. This was either during or just before the trial that put him away. I remember our waitress came over and whispered that he tipped her two $100 bills. Which was a fortune back then. He was the real deal for sure.

I used to live with a girl who's dad was Carlos Marcello's book maker. How I got out of that with out cement shoes I'll never know.

Cool dude, he had an 8 line phone in every room of his house, especially the bathrooms.

They've all realized who the supreme family is and have moved on to politics. If you can't beat them, join them.

But, the mafia is a government made fantasy, amiright?

Trust me when I tell you it is alive and well (and, no, I do not represent them)

Why would a mafia guy like Marcello care who his bookmakers daughter is living with?

Carlos had multiple bookies. The most famous allegedly being Durtz Murret. Did you date Lee Harvey Oswald's cousin?

RICO killed it for intents and purposes.

Omertà went by the wayside when guys were looking at 20-30 years. Loosely affiliated, independent organizations still exsist, but nothing like it was.

There used to be a mobbed up daycare center Uptown. I kid you not. It was one of those places where upscale moms take their toddlers for structured play to develop their minds. Two daughters of one of Marcello's lieutenants ran it.
