I've read the last couple days threads where wherever blame is placed someone makes an excuse and moves blame somewhere else. It's the coaches, it's Jennings, it's the young WRs, there's nothing wrong. . .

It's naïve to say nothing's wrong or it's just youth. Teams load the box to stop the run. There is no reason to not expect at least moderate success in the passing game. 47.1% completions and 9 TDs from your starting QB is not success. There are young QBs all over division 1 with less weapons having better success.

So the questions:

1. Why not get TEs more involved in the passing game?
2. Why not use WR screens or RB screens to get players in space and build confidence in your QB?
3. Why not use more quick slants vs slow developing plays where AJ tends to lock on for too long?

AJ seems to be able to only complete a deep fly or a dump off to a RB. Honestly watching the games it's like watching a team that doesn't practice passing. Drops, indecision, bad throws, bad timing, bad routes. Are they this green, this bad or this poorly coached?

Reality is that if the run game gets bottled up, outside of a possible big play in the passing game, there is little expectation that the offense can consistently move down the field through the air.

We did run slants

They didn't catch them. We throw to tight ends, usually are dropped.

As bad as the QB play is, overall receivers haven't held up their end of the deal

1. Why not get TEs more involved in the passing game? Too much traffic over middle of field for young QB to read coverage.

2. Why not use WR screens or RB screens to get players in space and build confidence in your QB? IDK

3. Why not use more quick slants vs slow developing plays where AJ tends to lock on for too long? Threw a slant and it was intercepted after the receiver fell down.

In their defense, they dont get that much practice catching balls at game speed.

It is just being happy when beating inferior opponents without even working on the passing game. Those are the games to work out those kinks.

At least six drops Saturday night and virtually all of them would have brought first downs are touchdowns. It's damn frustrating but both parties are clearly to blame. AJ also underthrew or overthrew several open receivers.

Here is my observation on the whole thing:

AJ is very much like JJ in a way. That way is he lacks timing with his drop back and never seems to throw the ball on time. Mett excelled with this last year and consistently had the ball on the way before the receiver made their break.
1. This can be built with practice, but it seems to me that maybe AJ just does not possess the skills to do it since I have not seen any improvement this year in this regard.
2. AJ cannot read the defense fast enough and constantly locks onto his primary receiver and panics if he is not open. He also seems to make his mind up before the play on what he is going to do and forces too many throws down the field.
3. He tries to wait until the receiver is visibly open which does not work at this level very often, so he eats the ball way too much (he did look slightly better Saturday with this when he actually took off for yards instead of sacks).
4. When you do this constantly, your receivers trust in you getting the ball to them on time starts to erode and they are very hesitant when you actually do throw to them since they are most likely getting the ball late and don't want to be decapitated.

This is the reason I am not sold on AJ, as he has failed to show he can make the quick decision on the field and seems to already have his mind made up before the play on where he is going. This was on display on 4th and 10 in OT, as he was going to throw that damn ball to Dupre from the beginning. He not only failed to make the decision to go elsewhere, he could have run for the first that he didn't seem to know they could have gotten. Epic failure on 2 fronts. For someone who supposedly spends sooo much time studying and working, that is totally unacceptable. This is also evident in his constant failure to read the D-End properly on the zone reads and always seems to chose wrong in where to go with the ball there. In light of this, I am ready for Harris to take his lumps, because AJ just does not seem to possess the needed skills for the position.

This more than anything convinces me that we need a change at the QB position. He seemed to be unaware that he just needed to get a first down in that situation (that he could have easily picked up running). It seems he never thought about running but rather throws a prayer to the end zone.
