Yeah I disagree. Black Flag was the first game in the series that almost requires you to upgrade your equipment. Some of the ship battles are almost impossible without ship upgrades.

In AC2, I did zero side missions and had so much money I couldn't spend it all. Not that I needed any of the upgrades, but I could fund pretty much everything with just the money from completing the story, which you can't really do in the AC games that came afterwards.

In Brotherhood and Revelations, I barely upgraded at all.
