Traditionally, are dealers in major population (and import) centers more likely to deal off msrp or is that a misconception? I'm willing to travel a couple of hundred miles from North Louisiana if I can get a remarkable deal. It's been a few years since I've purchased a new vehicle.

Houston... and Alabama. Taxes are lower in Alabama.

You are going to pay sales tax in the state in which you register the car. Doesn't matter one bit where you buy it.

I would go to Houston or since you're up there, Dallas. I don't know what brand you are buying, but if you are buying a brand that gives service loaners and you expect that service, be careful. I had an almost new BMW (current year 3000 miles)that I bought private and when it had problems Peake BMW would not give me a loaner because it did not come from them.
