With all of the Interstellar talk today, I can't help but point out how much I hate that AMC charges more than $5 extra for what they call "IMAX" showings. My options for tonight are standard showing for $10.65 or "IMAX" for $16.15.

The screen size comparison at AMC vs Entergy IMAX (the only true IMAX theater anywhere around NOLA)is laughable. AMC charges 50% more for only a 25% bigger than standard screen.

Link below explains the difference.

I saw the Winter Soldier on "IMAX" at the theatre by the Mall of LA. I didn't notice it being much bigger than a normal screen.

I've always been underwhelmed at the IMAX movies I've seen. Prob just never went to a real IMAX theater. Is IMAX in HD? That's the thing for me.

I've never understood why they don't show major action features at the Aquarium.

Is there a licensing issue?

ETA: I would assume they could charge pretty penny for this one.

If it's 35mm it's a rip off IMO. Check this out from Reddit:

The size of our 70mm IMAX copy of Interstellar

From the comments:

quote:

Not every IMAX movie is on a film like this.

This is so big because of the 70 mm film, that is used for many of the shots in this movie (I think 1 hour of overall duration). It is twice roughly four times the resolution of a standard 35 mm film, that most movies use.

Sadly, many resources are required for this. The equipment is much more expensive and quite heavy and big, so it is difficult to shoot most of the scenes on a 70 mm. Therefore, only a few movies use it and I don't think they are ever used for shooting full movies.

This is also the reason why the film platters are so huge. Every frame 7 cm (2.8 inches) wide, so it takes up huge amounts of space and most of these platters weigh several hundreds of pounds.

Not every IMAX offers this. Interstellar is only projected from a 70 mm in 44 cinemas worldwide (32 in USA). I, personally, am travelling 5 hours to Prague just to see Interstellar in this quality.

and..

IMAX isn't twice the resolution of 35mm, it's over eight times the resolution of 35mm. Since 35mm is approximately equal in resolution to 3.5k digital resolution, you'd need about 11k-12k digital resolution to match IMAX film resolution. We're not even close.

I asked this of them once. They have to pay a lot for the prints. So to pay for the print they'd have to show that movie a lot. But that infringes on the non-profit status that they have that says they have to show their documentaries X% of the time. Or some BS like that

Nothing is more of a ripoff than Cinemark's XD.

But yes, to answer OP's question, digital IMAX theaters with smaller screens are a ripoff.

It's not.

It's what is colloquially referred to as a "Liemax" screen.

IMAX has minimum standards and are worth the extra money imo.

Nowhere around here. I have noticed that IMAX has a much better picture and MUCH better sound that your standard stuff. I'm not concerned about the size as much as I am about the quality. Perkins Rowe is such a shithole of a theatre.
