Davis was still about 400 yards from his stand, which overlooked a lane between a swampy bottom from Bear Head Creek and a pine thicket.
Noted.

he oblivious buck finally turned broadside, and Davis, who was only braced against his knee, fired his 30-.06 as buck fever set in.
“I hit him high in the neck,” Davis said. “That’s why he fell. He sat there and tried to get up, but he couldn’t move.”
Davis patiently waited for about 30 minutes, but the big buck showed no signs of fading, so he crept forward until he was about 40 yards away for a behind-the-shoulder kill shot.
Why did he wait to go shoot the deer a second time?

I've done the same thing. I shot a nice 8 point when I was about 13 and I hit him high in the spine. Dropped him. He was struggling but could not stand up. I watched him for 10 minutes, but I didn't want to shoot again and mess up his cape.
After a few minutes I finally put another one in him because I had to.

Two reasons why I don't agree with that:
1. I have seen a "dead" deer get up and run off never to be seen again. Left a pool of blood where it fell but then stopped bleeding once it started running. Now if a deer moves, it is getting another bullet.
2. I am not going to sit there and see an animal suffer that long without putting it out of its misery.

That's four years in a row that at least one B&C Buck has came from the Singer area...Last year three over 160" killed and 2 two years ago.

They have to be coming from near the Sabine because everything else in Singer is all piney woods.

Bear head creek bottom, Beckwith creek bottom and Gum Slough....Sabine is 20 miles away

I have a few good friends that are on a lease in that area and they have shown me pictures of quite a few good deer. A lot more big deer in Beauregard parish area than people think.

My father has taken a few in the upper 140's and another member upper 130's in Beauregard parish. Have not heard anything about 160's that another poster mentioned.
