Plex Player Chromecast Quality Issue
Posted on 11/5/14 at 11:50 pm

I have the plex player running on my chromecast and all the faces appear to have a painted look.
The quality appears much lower than on the Xbox one and roku plex players despite being connected to the same network
I have the video setting quality at maximum
Xbox
Chromecast

Which ones are wireless

There is a setting in the Plex app called "quality over local network". Make sure that isn't set to something that is less than the quality of the content you're streaming. Now that I mention it, are you sure you have a high quality video to begin with?

They are all wireless and on the same network. Desktop, which houses the Plex server, is connected via ethernet.
Quality is perfect on Xbox one and Roku. I'll post pictures later if I come home for lunch

It is a problem over videos from 480 to 1080p only on the chromecast. Plex plays them perfectly on the other devices.
Quality over local network is set to maximum.

Odds are you're straining this network...
Why not just use the XBone to do all of this..?

how are you starting the plex player?
Android App?
Chrome Browser?
If you are using the Chrome Browser, you have to go to the plex.tv/web/app link, and then it will pop up a chromecast button within that web app. If you are trying to stream it using the Chromecast Extension in Chrome, and using the stream this tab option, the quality will suck.

Agreed. Casting tabs in Chrome is crap. I have mine only set to 10mbps stream speed over local network, and my 720p and 1080p content comes in flawlessly. I run the app on my phone and cast it from there.

It's the same issue on another chromecast on a different network too

Plex is in beta and crashes often.

I don't use the Plex app, I run the plex server on my PC and navigate to the files as a shared drive on my 360..Is it not similar on the One..?

You can do that, but they have the plex app now too

I have it, I'm just not going to pay monthly to use what I can do for free...

app was free from amazon a couple days ago. you dont need a plexpass to use it. that only applies if you're trying to stream content from outside your local network unless i'm missing something.
in short: plex android app is just a more convenient way to play your stuff rather than having a laptop and a chromecast plugin running to hassle with.
eta plex app doesnt hiccup. plex via laptop does. and yes, i'm using the "correct" chromecast icon in the plex webpage; not the chrome 'cast tab' chreomcast icon.

Desktop server to 360...Says "you need plex pass"
I just navigate to Media storage and pick plex server for free...

i'm still confused. so you're saying your xbox is your plex server??
i'm just using an old laptop. about to change the server to my son's alienware as soon as i install a SSD (christmas gift) and never seen that message.

No..Desktop is...
If I run the plex app on the 360, it looks back to the Desktop and says I need flex pass
If I play a file from media, and select the plex server (desktop) as the drive, it will play the files for free...

Why would I watch a movie on my phone..?
I've never tried it...My point was why use all the other toys he has, when he can just use the XBone..

no no no.
step 1: fire up tv with chromecast
step 2: fire up android plex app
step 3: cast to chromecast
just like netflix or anything else.
eta you're not watching anything on your phone. you're just using the app to play your media library direct to the chromecast.
i do this and the quality is outstanding.
