While I like Neil Young I don't think of him in the same sense that I do great songwriters like Dylan, Lennon/McCartney, Jackson Browne, etc. When was the last time you heard someone cover a Neil Young song? He writes great Neil Young songs though.

Dumb criteria, but I'll play

Built to Spill - Cortez the Killer

Chromatics - Hey Hey My My

Anders Osborne - Ohio

Phil Lesh & Friends - Keep on Rockin in the Free World

Everlast - Only Love Can Break Your Heart

I've heard tons of live covers as well. Not sure I've ever heard a decent studio cover by an artist that mattered. That's what I was referring too.

I'll jump in the ring with you b/c I know what you meant. Nobody off the top of your head had a huge hit covering one of his songs.

They're just being assholes because Neil was/is a big one too.

Sorry bro, you lost all crediblity when you suggested that Neil was the least talented member of CSNY. Pretty sure Crosby,Stills, and Nash would all disagree with that. Crosby put out some pretty horrible solo albums, although the guest personnel were incredible. Dude has just always been an addict. Nash had one solo album I really liked, Songs for Beginners , but after that is pretty meh. Obviously Stills is miles ahead of those two but still doesn't approach the variety, longeivity, and overall quality of Young's discography.

Oh yeah? You just lost credibility dropping the ol "you lost all credibility" line.

AND... AND... I never stated "Neil was the least talented member of CSNY". I posted that CSN was immensely better without him, the a-hole. In fact, I'm pretty sure I suggested he was a great North American artist, but still an a-hole.

Go listen to the CSNY 1974 boxset that was released this summer and get back to me, n00b.

The Sugar Mountain-type songs are just too "hippie on weed" for me

Didn't he write that song on his 19th birthday? A lot of "freewheeling" is also kind of immature, but the fact is that both Young and Dylan wrote more memorable songs before their 21st birthday than 99.99% of musicians write in their entire lives. FWIW the objectively correct American songwriter ranking goes:
quote:

1. Dylan
2. Hank
3. Neil Young
4. David Lowery

I would agree that he may not be the best lyricist in the world.. though he has some gems.. but overall, lyrics/song/guitar... I love him! Sure he has released some crap.. hard not to, with his longevity..

so simple, so perfect...

Sure, his lyrics are the weakest part of his music. But he's still a top 10 song writer for me. The music itself is very strong.
