Why is voting not all done electronically?

The fact that it takes time to 'tally' the votes is ludicrous in today's age.

There should be real-time feeds available as votes are cast. This is a relatively simple thing for an IT provider to execute and is so much more efficient.

Why is the process so archaic?

It costs a frick ton of money to replace everything that a lot of governments can't do with their budget.

Some people still can't make it to polling places.

Just a few of the many reasons.

because not everywhere is in the hotbeds of technology.

Plus absentee voting is paper.

That would influence voting/turnout.

What they should do is just allow everyone to vote via the internet. They should also allow you to have your vote automatically follow someone that represents your views. So if I wanted to vote the way Kim Kardashian votes... bam. Done.

Would every polling station have its own network or does it feed up to server run by county? Would states want to try to take control so it all feeds up to a single data center?

Setting up networks at all of these polling stations every other year and for special elections would cost a lot of money.

Low IT budgets and different systems in every state would probably open up security issues, unless the Feds want to take over and create a single secure system, but then you have to trust the Fed to manage that and not influence the results. With so much at stake, it seems like a great target to be hacked. Even something as simple as a DoD attack could screw up election night. In every case some physical/mechanical method of recording votes would still be needed for disputed results.

I'd love to see instant results, but I don't think the solution is as easy as it should be.
