New Orleans Saints LB Junior Galette has been named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.

It's the first time Galette has won the NFL weekly award.

The Saints captain had four total tackles (three solo), two sacks (11 yards lost) and a forced fumble in the 28-10 win over the Panthers on Thursday.

Great pass rusher. I still have concerns about him blowing contain with rushing QBs. My only issue with him right now.

Glad for him on the award, he really terrorized the Panthers last week.

Is that really his fault?

Someone else needs to be there when the QB gets flushed out. .

Tradition says, yes. But in this scheme, who knows? Traditionally your 4-3 DE is to hold contain as well as generate pass rush. But there is nothing traditional about this defense.

I mean, he's almost always a down lineman, not sure how he isn't considered a 4-3 DE in all aspects. Just my opinion, no telling what the assignments are at LB unless you know the playbook. You get about a 1 second window at the snap to where you kind of see the LBs reset and fall into their assignments, but so much of LB play is reactive that it's hard to tell off the field.

I thought he was.

This is the first time in a while that I've seen him listed as a LB.

Overpursuit is a weakness of his.

I would rather see over pursuit than under pursuit

Regardless, it's still a weakness in some ways on our defensive line. Some offenses have the skill players and the natural ability to exploit that weakness. A good screen game would be pretty effective to that side. Also, a jet sweep or end-around would be pretty effective if the corners are in man coverage. I am eager to see how he plays this week with the knowledge that Kaepernick can scramble.

I agree with you though, I'd rather see him generate consistent pressure, regardless how he does it. But you still have to recognize the risk.

He has his flaws, but what DE outside of JJ Watt doesn't?

He's good and he's making that contract look better and better. Pass Rushers are a premium and we might have a top 5 one at a discounted price.

Oh I'm not knocking him. Saints are lucky to have him at such a good contract. I said this off-season this was one of his few deficiencies, and I hoped then (and do now) that he improves in that regard. He has played the run better this year, IMO. So some of those things are on an upward trend. I am just pointing out, in lieu of playing a team with a scrambling QB, that he might have a bit of trouble.

We were fortunate that the Saints D figured out how to exploit the inexperienced Panther's backup Offensive Line fairly early. So Cam Newton was only slightly effective in scrambling. But it's no coincidence that the main extending plays and scoring drives were made possible by Cam buying yards with his legs. The 49ers have a much more competent offensive line and staff. Going to be interesting to watch.

Not his fault besides on one play near the end zone where he should have sacked Cam. We should have really had a LB/S in the backfield to cover for Cam running the ball, but I suppose it worked out well in the passing game so whatever.
