Player Profile: Freshman Austin Bain

LSUSports.net Profile - Austin Bain
quote:

Paul Mainieri on Austin Bain:
“Austin is a product of Dutchtown High School from right down the road in Geismar, La. He is the lone two-way player in the 2014 class. We believe he can make an immediate impact on our pitching staff with his stuff. Austin’s fastball consistently sits in the 90 mph range, and he features a plus breaking ball that he commands. He is a fiery competitor who will fill up the zone and go right after hitters. He will also have the opportunity to compete for a spot in the lineup as he is a good athlete that can swing the bat with authority. ”

Austin Looking to Fill Multiple Roles
quote:

What separates him from the other five is that Bain will get a chance to prove himself as a position player when fall practice convenes.

In his two-year varsity career at Dutchtown, that was exactly what Bain did - filled a role as the Griffins' ace on the mound and occupied a spot on the infield when he wasn't pitching.

Austin is a solid local player out of Dutchtown who is looking to contribute as a position player as well as pitcher. With fall complete, it's apparent that Austin's most likely role will be on the mound. The infield is already overloaded, but more importantly, he's got the stuff as a pitcher to get some innings here or there this year in relief. He'll be in the low 90s on his fastball with an average curve and a changeup that may already be his second best pitch.

Player Profile: Freshman Grayson Byrd

LSUSports.net Profile - Grayson Byrd
quote:

Paul Mainieri on Grayson Byrd:
“Grayson comes from strong baseball bloodlines as his father, Paul Byrd, is a former LSU Tiger great and 14-year MLB veteran. He was drafted in the 39th round of this year’s MLB Draft and would definitely have been drafted in the top 10 rounds if his commitment to LSU wasn’t so strong. He is a smooth defender who can make all the plays and throws in the infield. Offensively, he possesses an excellent approach at the play with outstanding strike zone discipline and ability to drive balls gap-to-gap from the left side of the plate. His 6’3” frame gives us the hope that he can continue to develop more strength, which could add more power down the road. We are extremely excited about Grayson, and we believe he can be a major contributor to our program.”

Grayson Looking to Overcome His Father's Shadow
quote:

"This is where I've always wanted to play," he said. "I committed in the spring of sophomore year because I wanted to make sure it wasn't a dream that I would wake up from. I went to a camp and the LSU coaches really liked me and when they offered me a scholarship, I was ready to jump on it.

"My mom is from there, my dad played baseball there, that's where they met. It's been a really big part of our lives for a long time, and I've imagined myself in purple-and-gold my whole life."

In a recruiting class that is sure to be known for its pitchers and with a father known all too well by the LSU fan base, Grayson's on-field ability has gone under the radar. A region 6A player of the year in Georgia, Class A State Champion, PG Southeast 1st team All-American, and 39th round selection by the Atlanta Braves, Grayson really does have the tools to be special. Although he may have to wait in the wings this year due to a veteran middle infield, he would have no trouble stepping in immediately. He hits for average, not power, but with almost always solid contact. And his defense is his best tool with excellent range and a slightly above average arm.

Player Profile: Freshman Gred Deichmann

LSUSports.net Profile - Greg Deichmann
quote:

Paul Mainieri on Greg Deichmann:
“Greg comes to us from Brother Martin High School in New Orleans. As a high school player entering college, Greg is as close as it gets to the proverbial “five-tool player.” Greg went undrafted for the sole reason that he announced to every MLB team that he did not want to be drafted and wanted to attend LSU. Greg’s ceiling is extremely high and he possesses all of the physical attributes to become a great ballplayer. His biggest tool is his power, as indicated by leading the state of Louisiana in home runs for three straight years. Greg will have the opportunity to help our ball club and will compete for significant playing time immediately.”

Greg Deichmann New Orleans Advocate POY
quote:

That future perhaps would’ve been going straight from high school to the pros, but Deichmann informed pro scouts that he was adamant on playing at LSU first.

“LSU is such a great program and coach (Paul) Mainieri has bene running such a great program since he got there,” Deichmann said. “Going to school is going to make me more mature as a person and as a baseball player. Being able to get drafted in three years, I think, will make me that much better game-wise.”

Greg is probably the most talented position player in this year's class. He already has college-level power with his bat and will be competing hard for the spot at third base left open by the departure of senior Christian Ibarra. Although he spent time at 3B over the summer, he still needs more work adjusting from SS where he played in high school. Also, while Greg showed glimpses this fall of his potential and ability, he was a little too aggressive at the plate leading the team with 15 SOs. I expect those results to be different in the spring and for him to be an essential offensive weapon late in the year.

Player Profile: Freshman Jake Godfrey

LSUSports.net Profile - Jake Godfrey
quote:

Paul Mainieri on Jake Godfrey:
“Jake Godfrey was drafted in the 21st round by the Atlanta Braves and is one of those rare power arms that you don’t always get at the college level. He works a low 90s fastball that gets up to 94 mph on a regular basis. At 6’3”, 215 pounds, he is a physical presence on the mound and has that durable frame that can withhold a strong workload. Jake is one of our three Chicago area signees, and he led his Providence Catholic High School team to the Illinois 4A State Championship this past year. Jake has an opportunity to make a big difference for us on the mound and with the influence of Alan Dunn he could join the list of the great LSU pitchers during his tenure.”

Twist of Fate Brings Together Jake Godfrey and LSU
quote:

"Right before my senior season started, I was on a recruiting trip and was set to go to three different schools," Godfrey said. "I went to the first two, but didn't even go to the third one because LSU was the second one. Once I got a taste of the chance I had here, that was it for me."

Jake is a freshman pitcher who tiger fans will come to know very well this coming season. He's one of three freshman pitchers with a real shot at starting on the weekends and even being the Friday night guy. Jake a typical power pitcher in a power pitcher's frame. But unlike most young power arms, he also has great control. Much like Aaron Nola in his first year, he'll need to learn that it's just as important to throw pitches out of the zone as it is to throw strikes.

Player Profile: Freshman Beau Jordan

LSUSports.net Profile - Beau Jordan
quote:

Paul Mainieri on Beau Jordan:
“Beau, and his twin brother Bryce, are from Lake Charles, La. and the rich winning tradition of Barbe High School. As the starting leftfielder, Beau won state championships both in his sophomore and senior seasons. He plays a winning brand of baseball and will impact our lineup because he presents an ability to be a difference-maker in different ways. His greatest attribute is his offensive talent and knack for making things happen - reaching base safely and driving in runs. He has an aggressive approach with a compact swing that also exhibits extension through the zone which allows him to drive the ball. Simply put, he is an advanced hitter and baserunner.”

Beau Wins MVP of Championship Game
quote:

Jordan earned the state championship's Most Outstanding Player award after his impressive performance in Barbe's 7-1 victory over Live Oak in which he went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and two runs scored that included a steal of home plate to tie the game at 1 in the first inning.

It would be easy to go on and on about Beau's accomplishments since he (and a few other LSU recruits) made it to the Little League World Series 6 years ago. But I'd rather talk about him as a player because we may be seeing him a lot this year. He's a powerful hitter who will also hit for average. He has deceiving speed due to his stature and great instincts in the OF. And as good as he is, he plays even better in big situations. Many may think the OF is locked down, but don't be surprised if Beau takes over a spot simply because he won't give PM any other choice.

Player Profile: Freshman Bryce Jordan

LSUSports.net Profile - Bryce Jordan
quote:

Paul Mainieri on Bryce Jordan:
“Bryce is the twin brother of Beau. Although they are hard to tell apart, their qualities as players are distinct. Bryce spent this, his senior season, as the starting catcher for Barbe High School. His defensive skills, in particular behind the plate, drastically improved throughout his high school career. Bryce encompasses versatility, having played in meaningful games at third base and first base. He is an on-base machine. I don’t think I’ve ever recruited a kid that is more determined to get on base, having set records in high school for getting hit by pitches. He has consistently squared up balls his whole high school career and has all the hitting tools you would look for in a player. He and his brother had a lot to do with the state championships they obtained throughout their careers at Barbe.”

Bryce Sets National High School HBP Record
quote:

"Getting hit doesn’t bother him," Barbe coach Glenn Cecchini told USA Today of Jordan. "He's built like a Neanderthal and he knows enough to turn away from the pitch."

Indeed, Jordan is a 5-foot-10, 195-pound infielder who has committed to LSU along with his twin brother Beau (insert joke about seeing double here). Bryce reportedly owns a hefty .644 on-base percentage, helping the Bucs to a 28-2 record entering the final handful of games on the regular-season schedule.

There's no other way to put it; Bryce Jordan is scrappy. And while that may just be a cliche to some, what it means is that he plays aggressive but smart. He may not be the fastest, most talented player, but he'll outwork and out-hustle anyone on the field taking advantage of every opportunity given him to get on base and put runs on the board. On defense, he's quick on his feet which is essential for a catcher or corner infielder and he makes few mistakes. However, with a veteran infield it may be difficult for Bryce to find a starting spot although I wouldn't be surprised if he worked his way in; players like him always do.

Player Profile: Freshman Alex Lange

LSUSports.net Profile - Alex Lange
quote:

Paul Mainieri on Alex Lange:
“Alex Lange is from the heartland of the country and has a solid power pitcher’s body. He is a tough competitor who possesses a low 90s fastball with good life down in the zone. He already has a power slider that we feel is a legitimate out pitch in the SEC. Alex was another recruit that expressed to professional baseball his strong desire to play for LSU and, therefore, went undrafted. Along with the rest of the pitchers in this class, we feel he is going to pitch some big innings for us in the 2015 season and beyond. Alex has a bright future and has demonstrated the maturity to be a guy we could potentially count on immediately.”

Alex Turns Heads in the Fall
quote:

"In all honesty, seeing the way Alex has pitched so far has probably been the most exciting aspect of fall practice for me," Mainieri said recently. "A lot of guys have done great things, but watching him throw gives me a sense that he has a chance to be a really dominant pitcher in the SEC. It's satisfying to see how advanced he is.

"He's shown some real refinement -- good velocity, a really good overhand curve ball and (pitching coach Alan Dunn) is working with him on his changeup. He's definitely with the right pitching coach. You can see the talent oozing out of him. He has a chance to be outstanding and a chance to be one of the next great ones for LSU."

Alex lead the team in strikeouts this fall and it's no secret why. Along with a power fastball that was consistently between 93-95 mph, Alex has a slider that will fool even the best hitters in the SEC. It's sharp and stays in the 85 mph range. Add in Alan Dunn working to get his changeup as a serviceable third pitch, and we may have our Friday night starter right here. If it weren't for the other freshman pitchers in this class, I would say Alex already has a weekend spot on lock.

Player Profile: Freshman Jake Latz

LSUSports.net Profile - Jake Latz
quote:

Paul Mainieri on Jake Latz:
“Jake is a left-handed pitcher that we are tremendously excited to get to campus. He was drafted in the 11th round and was a legitimate risk to losing to pro ball. Jake led his high school team on the mound to the 3A Illinois State Championship, where he threw a three-hitter in the championship game. If that wasn’t enough, he was also named the 2014 Illinois Player of the Year, where he struck out 114 batters in 62.1 innings of work. Jake will work in the 88-92 range with a plus breaking ball that is a big swing-and-miss pitch for him. Needless to say, we are looking for big things from Jake this upcoming spring.”

Hard Work Sets Jake Latz Apart
quote:

"It definitely is something I've wanted to reach ever since I was a kid," he said, "so when I got the opportunity, it was hard to turn down. I just felt like I needed to get three years down at college first and to get that experience in; see if I can improve on what I did this year and try to go higher in the draft in three years."

As for the recently-completed spring, Latz's eye-popping personal statistics coincided perfectly with Lemont's storybook campaign, which ended with the first championship in program history. The lefty allowed a total of two earned runs on the year, compiling an ERA of 0.23, while striking out just under two batters per inning (114 strikeouts in 62 1/3 innings). His control was also pinpoint as he walked just 12 batters.

Jake Latz is a pitching coach's dream. He's a lefty, throws hard, throws strikes, and has plus offspeed. He got a sore arm a few weeks into the fall and was shut down, but in the two appearances I got to see him, he certainly looked the part of a weekend starter. If this sounds familiar, it's because we've now covered the "Big 3" LSU freshman pitchers (and it wouldn't be unfair to add in Doug Norman). It's a real possibility that all three could start double digit games for LSU.

Player Profile: Freshman Ryan May

LSUSports.net Profile - Ryan May

Ryan May Strikes Out 16 in Just 5 Innings
quote:

In a 5 inning game shortened by the 10 run mercy rule, Ryan struck out 16 batters. I’m no math wiz, but that calculates to approximately ALL of the outs his team recorded…plus one (a dropped 3rd strike by the catcher that allowed a runner to reach first base).

Think about that for a moment….his entire team, save the catcher and maybe the first baseman, could have stayed in the dugout for the duration of the game. Not a single ball was put in play! In fact, Loranger manged only 2 foul balls all day.

Ryan May is this year's only walk-on to make the spring roster. As a 2013 high school graduate, Ryan has been waiting for this opportunity for well over a year. He had an up-and-down fall showing signs of being able to hold his own against some of LSU's best hitters, but he'll need to be more consistent if he plans to contribute out of the bullpen. He still has an uphill battle, but if he continues to work hard, he could one day be an integral part of the LSU pitching staff.

Player Profile: Freshman Doug Norman

LSUSports.net Profile - Doug Norman
quote:

Paul Mainieri on Doug Norman:
“Doug is a right-handed pitcher that committed to us from Ardrey Kell High School, which is located in Charlotte, N.C. Doug has the size and arm strength to emerge as a significant contributor for us under Alan Dunn’s guidance. He has an advanced, savvy feel for pitching and changes speeds on all of his offerings. He has a tall, wiry build with a lot of upside and room to fill. He’s an intense competitor and presents good deception in his delivery. One of the traits that stuck out the most in the recruiting process was Doug’s outstanding mound presence and aggressive demeanor on the rubber.”

Change of Plans Leads Doug to LSU
quote:

"This is where I always wanted to be," said Norman, a PerfectGame.org All-Atlantic Region selection and third-team All-American. "Some of the coaches back home kept telling me I needed to stay home, but LSU is my dream school."

"I grew up my whole life coming down here and visiting twice a year," Norman said. "I am probably the No. 1 LSU Tiger football fan there is. I've just always loved it."

Doug is yet another freshman pitcher who could see ample time on the mound this year. It would be a mistake for Tiger fans to overlook him even with the other 3 power arms in this class. He may not have the power velocity (yet), but his mound presence, control, and deceptiveness make him extremely difficult to hit.

Player Profile: Freshman Mike Papierski

LSUSports.net Profile - Mike Papierski
quote:

Paul Mainieri on Mike Papierski:
“Mike and his battery mate, Jake Latz, led Lemont High School to the 3A Illinois state championship. The thing that jumps out to you immediately when seeing Mike Papierski is that he looks like a big league catcher. From the body, the actions, and the way he plays the game, Mike is the total package. He’s a 6”3” switch-hitting catcher that shows an outstanding arm from behind the plate. Honestly, his game reminds me a lot of Micah Gibbs, with perhaps a little bit better arm from behind the plate. He’s already emerged as the leader of the freshmen class during the strength and conditioning workouts this summer. He’s worked hard and pushed others - which is an important attribute that you would like to see from your catcher. He can be one of the all-time greats at LSU when his career here is done.”

Papierski and Latz Follow Path to LSU
quote:

“It’s crazy how both of us are committed to LSU and that the same organization out of 30 drafted us,” Papierski said last week. “We’ve been friends since we were little and now we can continue our careers together.”
Papierski and Latz, teammates since age 8, were playing in Lemont’s sectional championship game when they were selected by the Jays last weekend.
Latz, ranked the 208th best prospect by Baseball America prior to the draft, was on the mound shutting out Manteno and helping Lemont secure its first sectional title, when his name was called 324th overall.
Both had to wait until after the game was over to hear they’d been drafted. Latz got the news from his father, while Papierski was told by his friends.

Mike is everything you want in a catcher. He has great length (6'3). He's quick on his feet with a strong arm. And he's a switch hitter. LSU lucked out when they went after Latz and were able to find Pap early before he grew into his frame and got the attention of MLB scouts. This year, Pap probably has the best shot (followed closely by Deichmann) of all the freshman position players of starting from Day 1. PM is very high on him, and after seeing him play in the fall, so am I. He really can be "one of the all-time greats at LSU".

Player Profile: RS Freshman Jesse Stallings

LSUSports.net Profile - Jesse Stallings
quote:

2014 Season:
Medical Redshirt

Jesse Fulfilling Dreams Despite Injury
quote:

“LSU baseball fans are the biggest and best in college baseball,” Stallings said. “We’ll have our times when we aren’t playing our best, but they’re still there and they’ll have our backs. Even the fact that one of these days I’ll be on the mound and they’ll be cheering me on really brightens my day.”
For now, Stallings, a wildlife biology major, said his main focus is in the classroom. Once spring practices begin, he said he wants to be there to help the team in any way that he can.
Before LSU ever approached Stallings, he said he always wanted to be a Tiger. He wanted to play in Alex Box no matter how many other colleges contacted him, and he would only go to another university if LSU felt he wasn’t good enough.

Jesse missed all of last year recovering from Tommy John surgery due to an injury his senior year of high school. It seems at least one LSU player gets this surgery every year. But it has become almost routine between the surgery itself and the rehab (although it's a very long, tedious process). Jesse is back this year and got plenty of work in the fall. He's still working to get back his endurance, but it's likely he'll see a good amount of work out of the bullpen in 2015.

Player Profile: Sophomore Parker Bugg

LSUSports.net Profile - Parker Bugg
quote:

2014 Season:
Appeared in 26 games (one start), recording a 2-2 mark with a 2.75 ERA and two saves in 36 innings ... registered five walks and 29 strikeouts and limited opponents to a .211 batting average ... first career collegiate start on April 29 vs. Alcorn State – worked two innings, allowing no runs on two hits with two strikeouts ... winning pitcher in LSU's 4-3, 13-inning victory at Ole Miss on April 17 - worked a scoreless 12th inning with no hits, no walks and two strikeouts ... earned first career LSU win in relief vs. Miss. State (April 6); limited Bulldogs to one run on two hits in 1.2 IP with one walk and three strikeouts ... superb relief outing versus Georgia (March 23), pitching a season-high 4.0 innings, allowing no runs on two hits with two strikeouts ... strong relief outing in LSU win at Vanderbilt (March 14); fired 1.1 innings, allowing an unearned run with no walks and two strikeouts ... earned a save versus Purdue (March 9), allowing no runs on one hit in 1.2 innings with one strikeout ... earned first career save on February 15 at New Orleans - one scoreless inning with three strikeouts.

Parker returns after an excellent Freshman season coming out of the bullpen for LSU. He'll remain in the bullpen this year, but will be relied upon much more. He's in the running for closer, but I think he'll most likely be long-relief or the setup man. Look for him to double his innings this year.

LSUSports.net Profile - Alden Cartwright
quote:

2014 Season:
Appeared in 21 games (seven starts), posting a 1-1 mark and a 2.41 ERA in 33.2 innings with 13 walks and 25 strikeouts ... the starting pitcher in LSU's SEC Tournament championship game win over Florida (May 25), allowing no runs on one hit in four innings ... pitched four innings in starting role at Texas A&M (May 4), limiting Aggies to one run on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts ... excellent outing in first career SEC start at Ole Miss (April 19) - worked four innings, allowing just two singles with no walks and two strikeouts; he retired the first 10 Rebel batters that he faced ... suffered a shoulder injury at Vanderbilt March 15; was out for two weeks before returning to the mound for a 0.1 inning March 30 at Florida ... made two appearances in the Miss. State series (April 5-6), working a total of 1.1 innings with no runs on one hit, one walk and one strikeout ... pitched 2.1 innings vs. McNeese State (April 2), allowing one run on two hits with one strikeout ... worked two innings vs. Southern (March 12), allowing no runs on one hit with season-best four strikeouts.

Alden was a great surprise on the mound last year being very strong in a few regular season starts and starting the SECT Championship Game. He's not overpowering, but he controls his offspeed very well. His curveball is, by far, his best pitch. He's also one of the few returners (outside of Poche) to likely get an opportunity at starting on the weekend. Regardless, he'll be relied upon heavily in 2015.

Player Profile: Sophomore Jake Fraley

LSUSports.net Profile - Jake Fraley

2014 Season:
Played in 49 games (27 starts), batting .372 (45-for-121) with seven doubles, one triple, three homers, 31 runs, 29 RBI and eight stolen bases ... started 25 games in left field and two games in center field ... LSU's leading hitter in SEC regular-season games, batting .350 (21-for-60) in 13 starts with four doubles, nine RBI and 13 runs ... batted .476 (20-for-42) in LSU's last 12 games of the season with one double, one homer, five RBI and eight runs scored ... hit .500 (5-for-10) in the SEC Tournament with two RBI and three runs ... batted .636 (7-for-11) in the Tigers' three-game sweep at Auburn (May 15-17) with one RBI, two runs scored, one stolen base ... named SEC Freshman of the Week on April 29 after he hit .533 (8-for-15) in the Tigers' four games during the week of April 22-27 with two doubles, six RBI, three runs, one stolen base and a .529 on base-percentage ... in LSU's SEC series victory over Tennessee (April 25-27), Fraley batted .455 (5-for-11) with two doubles, three RBI, three runs, one steal and a .462 on-base percentage ... blasted three-run homer in sixth inning versus Alcorn State (April 29) to trigger LSU comeback from a 6-1 deficit ... 3-for-4 vs. Tulane (April 22) with career-best three RBI ... pinch-hit RBI single in 11th inning versus Ole Miss (April 17) to give the Tigers a lead; LSU eventually won in 13 innings ... 2-for-4 at Florida (March 30) with one double, two RBI and one run scored ... launched a three-run homer -- his first career collegiate HR - to lead Tigers to win over Texas Southern on Feb. 23.

After a shaky fall in 2013, Jake went on to be every bit of the player we expected him to be last year. He's a true 5-tool athlete who's looking to build on a great freshman campaign. What could possibly be a positive omen is that Jake had just as bad a fall as he did last year going 9 for 48 with no extra base hits. He's still the frontrunner to start in LF, though, and will likely start the season somewhere around the top of the order.

Received a medical redshirt, as he was sidelined with a shoulder injury.

Hunter is having to make a difficult return from a shoulder injury that required surgery which is one of the most difficult injuries for a pitcher to overcome. He showed a lot of promise in 2013, so many are hopeful that he'll make a full recovery and be back to his old self if not better. The fall was a bit of a transition for him with much more focus on mechanics and feel rather than results. He may still be a couple months away before he'll be 100%.

Me too. So far with football it has been great IMO. I think basketball coverage will give a good indication of what to expect. Either way I am pumped. Will make watching on my tv so easy

So has there been a slight increase in home runs/harder hit balls with the new balls?

2014 Season:
Appeared in 16 games (all starts), posting a 9-3 record and a 2.45 ERA in 91.2 innings with 26 walks and 52 strikeouts, and he limited opponents to a .222 batting average ... worked as LSU's No. 2 starter throughout the season behind first-team all-American Aaron Nola ... finished No. 12 in the SEC in both ERA and in opponent batting average ... pitched the first six innings of LSU's NCAA Baton Rouge Regional win over Southeastern Louisiana (May 30), allowing four runs on eight hits with one walk and one strikeout ... named to the SEC All-Tournament team after defeating Vanderbilt (May 21) - seven innings, one run on five hits, one walk, three strikeouts ... excellent outing in win at Auburn on May 15 - limited AU to three hits in eight shutout innings, recording one walk and five strikeouts ... outstanding outing at Texas A&M on May 3 - was not involved in the decision but limited the Aggies to two runs on seven hits in seven innings with five walks and three strikeouts ... excellent no-decision outing versus Tennessee (April 26), limiting the Vols to two runs on five hits in seven innings with one walk and four strikeouts ... solid 5.2 inning outing vs. Arkansas, limiting the Razorbacks to three runs on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts ... defeated Miss. State on April 5, limiting the Bulldogs to one unearned run on three hits in six innings with two walks and six strikeouts; fired a season-high 108 pitches in the outing ... recorded his first career SEC victory on March 22 with an exceptional performance against Georgia, earning SEC Freshman of the Week honors ... he worked 8.2 innings, limiting the Bulldogs to one run on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts ... Poche' fired 5.1 hitless innings before Georgia chopped an infield single in the sixth ... worked 4.1 innings in SEC debut at Vanderbilt (March 15), allowing four runs on five hits in 4.1 innings with five walks and three strikeouts ... defeated Texas Southern (Feb. 23) by working seven innings and limiting TSU to one run on four hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.

Jared is coming off of a fantastic Freshman season where he became the Saturday starter behind Aaron Nola. A lefty with 3 solid pitches, Jared is a competitor above anything else. With a such a young staff, he'll be the anchor of the rotation regardless of the day he pitches (Friday or Saturday).

Player Profile: Sophomore Russell Reynolds

Received a medical redshirt as he continued to rehabilitate from the injury.

Much like Hunter Newman, Russell was sidelined last year with an injury after a promising freshman season. He tore his labrum, which as I mentioned before, is one of the worst injuries a pitcher can have. It has been over 18 months since his injury, and he still may not be 100%. Adding insult to injury, Russell had a setback this fall when he hurt his non-throwing elbow falling out the back of a truck. If he can get healthy and remain healthy, he would add much needed depth to a young pitching staff.

Player Profile: Sophomore Collin Strall

LSUSports.net Profile - Collin Strall
quote:

Paul Mainieri on Collin Strall:
“Collin was the last addition to this recruiting class and the sole junior college transfer. He attended Tallahassee Community College for one year where he had a very successful freshman campaign. He is a right-handed sidearm reliever who will sit in the mid to upper 80s with a great deal of movement. He also possesses a slider and a change-up that you don’t always see from that arm angle. In the 2014 season he was the go-to guy out of the bullpen, pitching critical innings for TCC. He had one career start, but managed a 7-2 record, which is a clear indicator that he had the ball in his hands when the game was on the line. He averaged better than a strikeout per inning in a very competitive JUCO conference. He pounds the strike zone and competes at a high level which will make an immediate impact in our bullpen. He will be the first sidearmer that we have had on our staff in my tenure, and we are excited about a different look or arm angle coming out of our bullpen.”

Collin comes to us from Tallahassee Community College where he was a middle reliever. He'll likely retain that roll at LSU specializing against right-handed hitters thanks to his side-arm deliver. Collin is a true side-armer, not a submarine or, like Aaron Nola, three-quarters. This gives him a big advantage vs. righties because of a slider that will sweep away from them while his fastball will tail in hard. Look for his success to be based heavily on this ability to work both sides of the plate.

Player Profile: Sophomore Danny Zardon

LSUSports.net Profile - Danny Zardon
quote:

2014 Season:
Played in 28 games with 13 starts (six at 1B, five at 3B, one at 2B, one at DH) ... batted .268 (15-for-56) with two doubles, one homer, 10 RBI and eight runs ... 3-for-5 with three runs scored versus Northwestern State (May 13) ... delivered a double and an RBI in LSU's May 10 win over Alabama ... launched a grand slam – the first homer of his collegiate career – on February 28 versus Yale.

Last year at this time, we weren't sure if Danny or Kramer would be taking over at 2B. Both had decent falls, but KRob got the nod and mainly his defense kept him on the field. This year, Danny has a good shot at 3B with Ibarra graduating. His bat seems to have come alive as well hitting over .300 in the Cape and leading the team in slugging this fall. He's got a strong enough arm to play third, but we'll have to wait and see if his glove can handle the hot corner.

Player Profile: Sophomore Kramer Robertson

LSUSports.net Profile - Kramer Robertson
quote:

2014 Season:
Played in 47 games with 30 starts at second base ... batted .200 (20-for-100) with six doubles, one homer, 20 RBI, 19 runs and three stolen bases ... unloaded first career collegiate home run versus Northwestern State on May 13 ... produced a two-run double in LSU win over Tennessee on April 25 ... also launched a two-run double in LSU's 5-4 win over Arkansas on April 12 ... 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI in win over Toledo (Feb. 22) ... made a spectacular sliding catch of a fly ball in foul territory vs. Grambling on Feb. 16; the play made the ESPN SportsCenter Top 10 that day.

Kramer won the 2B starting job last year of Danny Zardon. He did it mostly due to his defense being exceptionally quick with above average range. He had a Stevenson-esque freshman year at the plate just hitting .200 but still had a respectable on-base percentage due to walks. He hass improved his bat extensively culminating in his selection as a Cape Cod All-Star. He will likely remain at 2B this year where he and Alex Bregman work extremely well together.

Player Profile: Junior Alex Bregman

LSUSports.net Profile - Alex Bregman

2014 Season:
Started all 63 of LSU's games at shortstop, batting .316 (77-for-244) with 16 doubles, six homers, 35 runs and 12 stolen bases ... earned second-team all-SEC recognition from the league's coaches ... batted .451 (23-for-51) in last 12 games of the 2014 season with six doubles, three homers, 16 RBI and 12 runs ... named to the 2014 NCAA Regional All-Tournament team, hitting .533 (8-for-15) with two doubles, three RBI and two runs ... named to 2014 SEC All-Tournament team after batting .412 (7-for-17) with two doubles, one homer, five RBI, three runs ... career-high eight RBI vs. Northwestern State (May 13, 2014), including his first career grand slam ... 3-for-4 with a homer, a double, two RBI and two runs in May 2 win over Texas A&M; it was his third three-hit game of the season ... hit .444 (8-for-18) in LSU's four games during the week of April 22-27 with two doubles, three RBI and two runs ... Bregman was 6-for-15 (.400) in the Tennessee series (April 25-27) with two doubles, three RBI, two runs and one steal ... launched three-run homer versus McNeese State (April 2) to erase 3-2 deficit and lift Tigers to 10-3 victory ... reached base safely in the Tigers' first 19 games of the season; streak was broken at Vanderbilt (March 15) ... collected four RBI vs. Purdue (March 7) as he was 3-for-4 with a run scored.

This will likely be Bregman's last year as an LSU Tiger with him projecting to be a first-round pick in the 2015 draft. Unquestionably the teams best returning player, Alex will be looking to lead the Tigers back to Omaha. If there's one thing Alex can improve upon it's consistency. There were times last year where he made very little impact for stretches at a time. It may not be a fair criticism, but for this team to reach its potential, Alex will have to be that special player we know he can be in critical moments throughout the year.

Player Profile: Junior Chris Chinea

LSUSports.net Profile - Chris Chinea
quote:

2014 Season:
Played in 42 games (19 starts at catcher, four starts at DH and two starts at first base), batting .250 (19-for-76) with five doubles, two homers, nine runs and 13 RBI ... started two games in the SEC Tournament and was credited with three RBI ... threw out 10 base runners attempting to steal during the season ... 2-for-3 with a solo homer versus Alabama on May 10 in Game 2 of doubleheader ... 2-for-3 versus Arkansas on April 12 with one double, one RBI and one run scored ... 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI versus Purdue (March 9).

Chris' strength was and continues to be his hitting. Named a Cape Cod All-Star after batting .310, he hits for power and will likely be right in the middle of the LSU lineup regardless of where he plays on defense (or just takes the DH spot). He'll be in the running to start at catcher or first base but faces stiff competition behind the plate and a crowded infield that will likely push a more athletic player to first.

Player Profile: Junior Hunter Devall

LSUSports.net Profile - Hunter Devall
quote:

2014 Season:
Appeared in 18 games out of the Tigers' bullpen, posting a 1-0 mark and a 3.10 ERA in 20.1 innings with eight walks and 16 strikeouts ... earned relief win at Ole Miss (April 19), as he pitched 2.2 innings, limiting the Rebels to two hits with no walks and two strikeouts ... superb relief outing vs. Lamar (April 9) - two scoreless innings with one hit, no walks and career-best four strikeouts ... pitched a shutout inning at Florida (March 29), allowing no hits with one strikeout ... effective relief outing at Northwestern State (March 6), firing two scoreless innings with no hits and three strikeouts.

Hunter is a lefty pitcher who will be critical against teams with heavy lefty lineups. His 3/4 arm slot and plus breaking pitch make him very difficult to hit from the left side. For example: LSU is a lefty-dominated team, and Hunter lead all pitchers this fall with a 11.17 K/9 ratio. He'll still be in the bullpen this year but will no doubt increase his workload with so few LHP in the pen.

From what I've heard, all home games and all SEC games should be covered by SECN+, so you can at least watch them online through WatchESPN if they're not on TV. Only question will be road non-conference games. Fortunately there aren't many of those.

Player Profile: Junior Mark Laird

LSUSports.net Profile - Mark Laird
quote:

2014 Season:
Played in 59 games with 58 starts (53 in right field, five in left field) ... batted .291 (65-for-223) with 10 doubles, two triples, 27 RBI, 38 runs and 10 stolen bases ... hit .333 (12-for-36) in LSU's eight postseason games with one double, one triple, five RBI and nine runs scored ... named to the SEC All-Tournament team after hitting .471 (8-for-17) with one double, one triple, four RBI and six runs ... delivered his second game-winning, walk-off hit in less than two weeks in 8-7 win over Tennessee (April 25); Laird's two-out single with runners on first and second in the bottom of the ninth lifted LSU to the victory ... Laird also lined a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning on April 12 to give LSU a 5-4 win over Arkansas ... hit .412 (7-for-17) in the Tigers' four games during week of April 15-19 (vs. Southern Miss and Ole Miss) with one double, two RBI and three runs ... batted .462 (6-for-13) in the Tigers' four games from April 2-6 (vs. McNeese State and Mississippi State) with two doubles, one triple and five RBI ... 3-for-4 in April 6 win over Miss. State with two doubles, two runs and a career-best four RBI ... collected six hits in 14 at-bats in the Tigers' four games during the week of March 19-23 (vs. South Alabama and Georgia), batting .429 with one double, one RBI, two runs, three walks, one steal and a .529 on-base percentage.

Mark is now well-known to Tiger fans having been the RF starter since his freshman year. His best tool is his speed and quickness being one of the fastest on the team from home to first. His outfield range is unmatched but his average arm keeps him in RF instead of CF. Mark is a contact hitter who has continued to improved year after year. He his almost .360 in the Cape this year even hitting a homerun. He'll likely be somewhere near the top of the lineup for LSU.

Player Profile: Junior Andrew Stevenson

LSUSports.net Profile - Mark Laird
quote:

2014 Season:
Played in 61 games (59 starts in center field) and was LSU's leading hitter with a .335 (68-for-203) average) ... collected seven doubles, five triples, 32 RBI, 41 runs and nine stolen bases ... was named to the Watch List for Gregg Olson Award as the breakout player of the year ... finished No. 2 in the SEC in triples with five ... hit .429 (6-for-14) in the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional with one double and one steal ... 3-for-4 in NCAA Regional win over Houston (May 31) with one double ... collected three RBI in win at Auburn (May 15), producing a double and scoring one run ... scored game-winning run in top of 10th inning at Texas A&M (May 2) - led off the inning with a double, moved to third on wild pitch and beat the throw home on a chopper back to the pitcher ... 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI in LSU win over Tennessee on April 25 ... career-best four hits, as he was 4-for-4 with one double, two RBI and one run scored vs. Southern Miss (April 15) ... compiled a 17-game hit streak, LSU's longest of the season, that ended after the second game of the doubleheader at Vanderbilt (March 15) ... provided the game-winning hit in the Game 1 victory at Vanderbilt (March 14), a two-out, two-run single in the top of the eighth inning that gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead.

Andrew made a huge leap at the plate that year and expect him to continue the trend. He has also improved his arm strength getting him very close to a "5-tool player" (he lacks elite power). His biggest asset is by far his speed which he utilizes extremely well in CF and at the plate. And while he only stole 9 bases for LSU last year, Andrew picked up 21 bases in Cape Cod where he hit .327 and selected as an All-Star.
