Got a job offer in ND today and I'm trying to see just how miserable a 7th ward hard head will be in that brutal ND winter. Never been outside the south during the winter. Have never experienced a really bad winter either. what are my chances of surviving a northern winter. When does it start to warm up again? Can I manage to get up there and back in my Challenger until I can save up to buy a diesel truck? Will I freeze to death?

Anyone here with land rig experience in the far north, Dakota, Michigan, Washington, etc?

Dont get a diesel. You'll be fricking with it all winter to keep the fuel from gumming/freezing.

A friend of mine said his friend, who is black, was pretty miserable up there. It wasnt all because of the weather either. People up there arent too used to black folks.

I hear that the moment before you die of hypothermia, there is an incredible warmth that lets you know that you're going to a better place.

pay is good but that's the only good thing about the BAkken

expect work to slow down if oil stays below $80 too

HIV/AIDS has exploded up there because of big oil flooding ND with sex crazed men where there is a shortage of women.

Therefore, sex trafficing and prostitution has exploded, and with it HIV/AIDS.

Lisa Ling told me that.

No other way to say it but it is Fricking COLD.

Can start as soon as early October and can last in to June.

Can get as cold as -40F actual temps and with wind-chill it can get to -80F or colder.

Went to visit family for July 4th a few years back and the high that day was 34.

Yep pretty much sucks. It is like the modern equivalent of a gold rush town back in the Wild West.

There is a lot of money being made, but prices are also inflated on everything too as a result.

For example anyone who owns land is renting out pieces of the land for people to park trailers on, and they will fit as many trailers as possible on the land they own. Just the space needed to park a camper trailer will cost about $1500 per month, and that is without any power, water, etc.

You can look at all of the infrastructure and just know that in several years there will be sage brush rolling through abandoned streets.

It really is interesting to see in person.

Oh and the winter there is among the worst on earth. Best of luck

It's amazing to see the transformation that has taken place since the late 90's.

In the late 90's I would go to Minot duck hunting every year and it would take 5 minutes to get from the Northside to the Southside of town in 5 minutes. Went back last year for work and it took at least 20 minutes to make the same trip.

ND is truely a modern boomtown.

I know people who are from ND (Minot, and Grand Forks) and they are not big fans on how much their state has changed with all of the newcomers arriving there for work.

I have some extended family in Minot who tell me about the good ol' days prior to the boom.

Prior to the boom, the residents would just leave their cars running in the parking lots of stores during the winter while they were in doing their business. Or how residents would leave the keys in their vehicles at night incase a fellow local's car broke down on the side of the road, in winter, the broke down person would be able to get home and not freeze to death.

That definitely does not happen anymore. The crime rate has shot through the roof.

I worked on the rigs in ND for three years. Winters were pretty miserable. Months at a time of negative Temps (worst I experienced was 65 below with wind chill...about 45 below actual).

Being from the south I was not prepaired for those winters. Just get a ton of under armor extreme cold gear and layer your clothing. That's makes it a little less miserable.

It usually starts to get cold this time of year and probably will last till after march...but all winters are different...Hell we got 14" of snow in one day on like April 24th one year.

DO NOT live in Williston...if that's an option. I haven't been up there for the last couple years but it was the worst of the worst. Bismark, or even Minot are better choices.

Good Luck.

Edit: lows dpiping into the teens this week in Minot.

It starts getting cold in early October and doesn't get warm until mid May. And by warm I mean 50s to low 60s.

Lived in Minot ND for 7 years...
Notes:
Don't take language from the locals as offensive, it's mostly curiosity.
They will still use the term colored, but do not experience a lot of black folks.
The weather is oppressive. It is dark, cold, dry, and will test your will.

I live in South Dakota. The issue is not so much the cold as it is the wind. A 0 degree day is actually not that bad if the sun is out and there is no wind. Sweatshirt weather. But add wind and it gets brutal in a hurry. The Dakotas get a lot of wind.

I was trying to read through the thread to find out where the OP was moving. Fargo or Grand Forks in the eastern side of the state? Great places to live. Fargo is a very nice town that is growing with good jobs in the tech industry. The silicon prairie is what it is dubbed. Williston, Mandan and the Bakkan reserve to work on the oil rigs? Eff that. No way you'd get me to move out there. Great pay but there is a lack of housing, not much of anything to do, crime, and price gouging on everything.

I have a black friend who works up there. He is always on FB posting one of two things:
1. how fricking cold it is.
2. pics of his bomb arse BBQ's he's throwing down b/c he's making bank and has some hookup on steak and beef in general.
