No way I could spend that long in any 5th wheel. Not to mention winters with temps in the -20's regularly and the gas bill that comes with that.. Avg. RV spot up here is $1100.00 not counting the 250 gal propane tank you have to get hauled in and rent and refill.

Here's something to consider that noone has brough up yet?
What happens if two years in, the job goes away? You get fired, you get transferred, you quit, the company goes under, you want to move back home, etc.
Sounds like the 3K is taxable (cause you get it whether or not you spend that much). So after tax, it's going to be less. And in that case, you need to not look at it as a housing allowance, and just look at it as part of your salary (kind of like you get a 36K a year bonus for living in that area).
I don't know about that area to tell you to rent or buy... but think about those two things in your decision. If you think the market is going to go up in the mid to long term and you would stay there not matter what, I'd consider buying. Or, if you want to be a landlord in that state even if you live in another, I'd consider buying. Most other sitations, I'd consider renting as cheap as I can get away with.
