I think Subway may be coming close to holding that distinction. Their franchise fees are pretty cheap, and they've been able to expand a lot.
It probably costs a couple of million to develop one McDonalds. You have to have something like $750,000 in liquid assets to contribute to a single franchise to even be considered (without borrowing). I imagine that McDonalds probably spanks Subway in single store sales though.

Subway has a lot more stores, but McDonalds blows Subway away in profit per store.

McDonald's almost always have great locations on a huge chunk of land too. Those prime corner locations with room for a drive though and generous parking are a lot more expensive than the end cap in a strip mall that your typical Subway occupies.
I imagine most McDonalds franchise owners are millionaires who own 5-6 stores at least.
I have an uncle that owns 7 Subways. He bought one franchise and managed it himself, eventually hiring a good staff and buying a second, third, etc. it's something a middle class person can get into. That's not the case with McDonalds.

Chik Fil A turns more profit than McDonalds per store I believe.
I think CFA stores pull in around 12-15% profit per gross revenue. Stores can do 2-6 million in revenue on average.
Also McDonald's food is pretty gross.

another thing McD's should focus on is taking lessons on hiring practice and employee training from places like Chic-Fil-A and Raisin Cane's. Same area...but MUCH better employees.
