I mean, he's purposefully spent his entire career not making a big deal out of it. He never hid it, but he refused to talk about it in interviews or anything, I assume because he felt like it wasn't important and it wasn't anyone's business.

But then, even though it was pretty much common knowledge, there were still articles about it every so often, there was that case where a reporter was doing a story about the lack of openly gay CEOs, and the anchor basically said, "But Tim Cook is Gay, right?" and people freaked out like he was outing him or something.

I guess Cook just figured that since people insisted on talking about it, and since it had come up in the media and been an occasional distraction, that it was best to just make a public statement so people would stop acting like he was hiding something.
