me too.

I am anti religion in school, but frick we should learn about the histories of these religion.

If they just did it with islam I would have an issue, but if they did the big religions - islam, christianity, hinduism, judiasm, its a net good thing.

we read the bible in high school, or parts of it, in AP history.

We read it in English class. I even made a film version of the book of Job.

quote:

3 One day when Job’s sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 14 a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby, 15 and the Sabeans attacked and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

We did a drive by on some cattle with a paintball gun for this scene.

The historical tenets of Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, etc. can ALL be taught in public schools and ARE taught in public schools.

This Marine was wrong. Also, any school that does not teach the basic tenets of Christianity or of the Protestant Reformation in their history classes is failing spectacularly in educating students. The same goes for Islam, Judaism, or any other major world religion.

People who say that teaching the basic tenets of a world religion has no place in public schools could not be more wrong.

If I wrote a 3 page essay on Islam, I'd get Jihaded so hard.

Barack Obama? Saul Alinsky? Their supporters? All or some of their supporters?

Who is "we"?

Actions speak louder than words. We can see with our eyes and hear with our ears and judge whether some Leftist "loves" the USA or wants to fundamentally transform it because they fundamentally don't like it.

Of course, I don't know you or what's in your heart and I'm not familiar with your political beliefs.

It is never the students who get upset, it is the parents.

Leaving Islam out of a world history curriculum would be like leaving Mark Twain out of an American Lit. curriculum.

It is important that students learn this stuff. It matters. I can also almost guarantee that the student is learning about the Great Schism, the Reformation, Buddha, etc. However, an assignment is brought home about Islam...and holy smokes, the world is going to end.

I went to a private school and we covered the basic tenets of Islam.. I found nothing controversial or offensive about it. Being made aware of what other religions believe in the most general sense is not indoctrinating or propaganda.

I believe kids should learn about all religions in school. It is important in understanding both our history and many of the social and political issues of our time.

I don't see anything wrong with an essay that requires students to research Islam, assuming they are also being educated on Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Chinese religions and Christianity at a minimum. Those who I find complaining about religious education in schools are usually the outspoken "angry" atheists or Christians who don't want their children exposed to any other faith.

I guess I just view high school as bare bones, really isn't a whole lot of geometry, algebra, physics, chemistry, biology, history, writing, literature you can sacrifice in a tiny 4 year span to make room for studying religious texts...not that I have a problem with it. That sounds like an elective class in college or something you'd want to know about in a medieval literature class

now just learning basic things about the religion, don't they already teach that in history class? frick, we had an entire test that was half about the role of eastern orthodox in kiev society

High school isn't supposed to be bare bones.

People come out of high school these days with enough college credit to begin college as a sophomore.
