I'm only out of state now. But casual fans are what keep afternoon games from being a ghost town on getaway day at wrigley.

I've been elbows to elbows with die hards and casual fans when the dbacks bumped us after one game at wrigley in 2007. And when the dodgers took the first 2 in 2008. And 2003... Let's leave that one alone. But those fans were no less invested. They didn't cheer less. I just don't think they're a subset of fans just because they weren't there for the garbage games those years or any other year. We're all cubs fans.

And if they're into it enough to let the hiring of a manager be the catalyst to go dump money into the organization and that increased revenue goes to improving the team then I'm certainly all for it.

I just find it odd that your reaction to this hiring Is complaining about a fan donning a sandberg jersey.

Now if you want to talk about meatballs that just want to bitch about how terrible everyone is I'm on board. frick those guys.

The way I look at is we will enjoy/appreciate success more, but shouldn't begrudge anyone for joining in.

This is awesome news. I'm probably going in on a full season ticket package with some buddies. One of the guys came up after six years on the waiting list. Playoffs is the goal baby!

Everyone in Chicago was pumped when they hired Dusty Baker as well. The Cubs will always be the Cardinals' little brother.

Typically fans do get excited about a new hire.

Tell me, are you suggesting Baker and Maddon are the same?

Well said

I've been a fan since I can remember (92-93)... Very little to get excited about the last few years (other than paying off contracts ), let the bandwagon fill up!!!

Yeah, and they were 5 outs away from the World Series with him. So that's not the best example to show that the excitement is not warranted.

I think those moves are to be celebrated, because getting rid of those contracts and building up the farm system were crucial to getting this team where it needs to be. And of course, they won the division in '07 and '08, but that's starting to feel like it was decades ago (probably because they didn't win a damn game in either playoffs).

Well lucky for you no games on wgn.

Is this true? I've read where there might be a chance for a new short term deal. I've been watching the Cubs on WGN down here in New Orleans since I was kid during the Sandberg/Dawson days.

Exactly.

Don't be excited cubs fans, you also got excited about hiring a guy who came in and won the division in his first year, learn from that rabble rabble rabble.

It could happen as the cubs haven't sold/created their own sports network, as of yet, but it's my understanding that WGN is dumping all sports (when the contracts expire) and going to a TBS like model by adding more original programing.

Lots of people will surely jump in, and that's fine by me. I'm a big cubs fan but know that there are many who have been much longer than I and therefore they would most likely feel more vindicated. Same goes for me vs. those who jump on board if/when they do do well again. But that won't change the joy I feel.

It happened when the Blackhawks got good again and the city "came back". That didn't affect my utter joy one bit. It actually made the city a lot more fun. Lucky for us, the Cubs and the Blackhawks aren't like the White Sox...where even when they do win no one cares and the bandwagon is driving around at 10% capacity.

All of this good news and excitement is just setting everything up perfectly for a cubs-style disaster next season.

I sat in the bleachers a decent number of times down the stretch this season because tickets were going for about $12, and those fans were awesome, and totally into the game. Some of the best heckling I've ever seen, and very much into it...all for a terrible team. Hell, the Cubs were 11th in attendance this year.

Why did he leave the Rays if he was just going to land with this crappy team?

More money, better city, good prospects, awesome fanbase, historic franchise that he could become a God to if he wins the series, a historic ballpark that's receiving hundreds of millions of dollars in improvements, owner that's willing to spend. I'm sure there are a few others.

Fair enough. I just expected him to land somewhere that was ready to win soon.

Oh yeah, that's what I forgot...a team that's on the verge of starting to challenge for the division
