I’m helping out with this big buddy program here in BR. This kid likes sports, video games (superheroes, shooting), books. OT parents, what did you give your child for his birthday? It will be his 12th.

A football or basketball doesn't seem like a horrible idea to me.

Kind of been in this situation off and on for a while now... the best thing you can probably do for him is take him somewhere to do something he'd probably never have a chance to do.

The kid we interact with is from a poor home and doesn't get to do stuff like going to the zoo or sporting events.

It's amazing how simple things that you or I may take for granted are a big deal to a kid that comes from nothing.

Maybe take him to play some laser tag or something like that.

Give him this book and work with him on some of the projects:

The Dangerous Book for Boys, by Conn and Hal Iggulden, is a guidebook published by HarperCollins, aimed at boys "from eight to eighty." It covers around eighty topics, including how to build a treehouse, grow a crystal, or tell direction with a watch. Also included are famous quotes, stories, battles, and phrases that "every boy should know." It was published in the UK on 5 June 2006, and reached number one in the UK non-fiction charts several times, selling over half a million copies

I would steer clear of the video games. Get him a few subscriptions to some sports magazines (SI, ESPN). Get him some sports equipment to the sports he likes the most (bball, football, Nike/UA gym attire). I just hate giving kids video games. Make them go outside!
