Yes. You will come off as desperate. If you manage to get an offer, will probably be a low ball offer.

ETA: I am the hiring authority for my department at my company.

how many do you feel is "too many"

if you are dissatisfied with your current position, i say apply on as many as you qualify for.

if none of them bite then it is time to start looking external.

I agree with this. I'd apply for the highest position that you objectively think you're qualified for.

Are you referring to positions within your own company?

Really? What if the company is doing a lot of hiring? What do you do if you see postions that keep popping up that are different from the one you applied for, but are qualified for them?

I applied for 9 different positions within this company and I qualify for all of them.

Good managers are always on the lookout for good talent. I have brought candidates in that I know were way over qualified for the position they applied for. I've then worked with other managers within my department and others to best place the candidate. I can pretty much assure you that a candidate will be approached with skepticism if applied to a large number of positions.

I made sure it wasn't in the same departments though. Does this still apply even though the jobs were in different departments? On the website it stated that if you qualify, feel free to apply to as many as you wish so I thought it wasn't that big of a deal.

what if they are for the same position or very similar positions within the same company? I would assume that is not frowned upon.

Depends on the company. MY HR department would pass on such information.

I have never personally not hired someone because they've applied to several positions. It does guarantee that you will loose some leverage if you do get the position.

Since we are talking about applying for jobs, is there a regional bias when looking at candidates? I have applied for several jobs that I am qualified for if not over qualified, and the only ones I ever get interest from are the local ones.

I know for a fact there are some major O&G companies that will dump you from all posting if you apply to too many. And the number is lower than 9.

This could definitely be the case if you are currently working for smaller company that potential employers in other areas are not familiar with. Hiring managers tend to know what kind of candidates they are bringing in if they have worked for a well established company with some notoriety.

Well, I do have some leverage b/c I already have a job and the offer will have to be attractive for me to leave my current job.

I understand that, but you will most certainly not be the only qualified candidate. When going through the candidate process, you want to make the company and hiring manager feel as comfortable with you as possible. They will already be some skepticism around you if you applied to nine different positions. Other candidates, especially those coming from qualified companies, might not have that cloud of suspicion around them.

Yes. I'm internal right now, and my dad insisted I basically apply for every job a I could to get promoted, even if is loathe living at that location. Finally, I just stopped following his advice (thank god, because if I didn't I'd still be living in Midland hating life), plus I thought I was getting a reputation of jumping out at any given job. My boss kind of confirmed it, and told me to only apply in places I'd actually want to live.

Good advice and I'll stop looking with that particular company for a while and allow the process to take place with those that I applied for. Thanks for advice

Well at least they now know the minimum you are willing to take. That is always important when starting a salary negotiation, brilliant!
