I will be in Dublin for St. Patty's Day this coming year. I am looking for recomendations on where to stay. Either hotels or an area in Dublin. Looking to be walking distance from Parade, down town, etc.

Also, any recomendations on what to do besides Guiness and Jameson tours.

First off, don't spell it 'patty'. That's a girls name. It's Paddy. I learned this the hard way.

I've stayed outside the city in a small suburb called Howth. B&B called Azure. Very nice. Family is amazing. 30 minute train ride in to Connelly station. Also the cliff walk in Howth is amazing. Right on the coast.

First, it's Paddy.

Patty = girl

Paddy = Padraig = Patrick

Second, check if Leinster is playing. Cheap and great fun.

I echo the recommendations of Kilmainham Gaol and Trinity's museum. There are also a number of great churches to look through.

Again, to reiterate, if you call it Patty, they'll ask why you castrated their patron saint.

There are three places I recommend for the St. Patrick's Day parade in Dublin; One, is at the top of O'Connell Street, near the Liffey; the second, is near the front gates of Trinity/ Bank of Ireland Trinity branch; the third, is down by St. Patrick's Cathedral, the terminus of the parade route. The third is the least crowded area on St. Patrick's Day itself, but there are a ton of loiterers and hangers on just beyond it, waiting to load up marching band equipment, etc.

Along the parade route, I'd recommend (from north to south) you can see the GPO, the Book of Kells at Trinity, the Trinity Library as well, can shop on Grafton Street, hang out in Stephen's Green Park, or go back towards Dublin City Castle, up to Christchurch Cathedral, and down to St. Patrick's-- you could walk that route, from one end to the other, in 30 minutes on a normal day.

If you have more than that day itself, a ton of day tours and such run out of the Dublin City Castle area (there is a tourism office there with a lot of brochures), and you can always just hang around the inner city of the South Side, doing things like walking the markers of the ancient Viking settlement of Dublin, or taking the 'duck' viking tour.

Source: I lived about 200 yards south of St. Patrick's Cathedral for a few years, just where Old Dublin turns into Little Islamabad.

We stayed at a Clarion in Liffey Valley. Wasn't walking distance but there were a bunch of cabs and it was only 3 or 4 euros per ride. We went out in the morning and stayed in dublin all day.

| This. It's smid-dicks.

Also a street map is useless. Street names change every damn block.

Rent a car and go to the west or south coast.

Memorize this:

quote:

DUBLINERS – SEVEN DRUNKEN NIGHTS LYRICS

As I went home on Monday night as drunk as drunk could be
I saw a horse outside the door where my old horse should be
Well, I called me wife and I said to her: Will you kindly tell to me
Who owns that horse outside the door where my old horse should be?

Ah, you're drunk,
you're drunk you silly old fool,
still you can not see
That's a lovely sow that me mother sent to me
Well, it's many a day I've travelled a hundred miles or more
But a saddle on a sow sure I never saw before

And as I went home on Tuesday night as drunk as drunk could be
I saw a coat behind the door where my old coat should be
Well, I called me wife and I said to her: Will you kindly tell to me
Who owns that coat behind the door where my old coat should be

Ah, you're drunk,
you're drunk you silly old fool,
still you can not see
That's a woollen blanket that me mother sent to me
Well, it's many a day I've travelled a hundred miles or more
But buttons in a blanket sure I never saw before

And as I went home on Wednesday night as drunk as drunk could be
I saw a pipe up on the chair where my old pipe should be
Well, I called me wife and I said to her: Will you kindly tell to me
Who owns that pipe up on the chair where my old pipe should be

Ah, you're drunk,
you're drunk you silly old fool,
still you can not see
That's a lovely tin whistle that me mother sent to me
Well, it's many a day I've travelled a hundred miles or more
But tobacco in a tin whistle sure I never saw before

And as I went home on Thursday night as drunk as drunk could be
I saw two boots beneath the bed where my old boots should be
Well, I called me wife and I said to her: Will you kindly tell to me
Who owns them boots beneath the bed where my old boots should be

Ah, you're drunk,
you're drunk you silly old fool,
still you can not see
They're two lovely Geranium pots me mother sent to me
Well, it's many a day I've travelled a hundred miles or more
But laces in Geranium pots I never saw before

And as I went home on Friday night as drunk as drunk could be
I saw a head upon the bed where my old head should be
Well, I called me wife and I said to her: Will you kindly tell to me
Who owns that head upon the bed where my old head should be

Ah, you're drunk,
you're drunk you silly old fool,
still you can not see
That's a baby boy that me mother sent to me
Well, it's many a day I've travelled a hundred miles or more
But a baby boy with his whiskers on sure I never saw before

And as I went home on Saturday night as drunk as drunk could be
I saw two hands upon her breasts where my old hands should be
Well, I called me wife and I said to her: Will you kindly tell to me
Who owns them hands upon your breasts where my old hands should be

Ah, you're drunk,
you're drunk you silly old fool,
still you can not see
That's a lovely night gown that me mother sent to me
Well, it's many a day I've travelled a hundred miles or more
But fingers in a night gown sure I never saw before

As I went home on Sunday night as drunk as drunk could be
I saw a thing in her thing where my old thing should be
Well, I called me wife and I said to her: Will you kindly tell to me
Who owns that thing in your thing where my old thing should be

Ah, you're drunk,
you're drunk you silly old fool,
still you can not see
That's a lovely tin whistle that me mother sent to me
Well, it's many a day I've travelled a hundred miles or more
But hair on a tin whistle sure I never saw before

Depends on how nice you want. Personally, I wouldn't bother with the super upscale places-- the price and quality difference in the city itself is minimal; since you are angling to be in the middle of stuff, there is a hotel directly across the street from Christchurch Cathedral is a Jury's Inn

LINK

On that page, you can see via an inset map how close everything is; it is on the parade route, even. I'd recommend trying to book as early as possible, as there are a ton of tourists for the parade.

Anyway, if you find a place and want to ask if Iknow anything about it, let me know. Oh-- and Temple Bar is a good restaurant/pub district about 150 yards from the front door of that hotel. Irish beef at an FXB steakhouse is pretty solid, and in a land where non-bland food is rare, a good experience.

Thanks, I'll check into it. Is one side of the River better than the other? North v South? Looks like hotel you mentioned was on south side.

Also, hotel doesn't have to be fancy as long as it is centrally located. I don't plan on being in the room very much other than sleeping.

If you ask a Northsider, they'll say North of the Liffey is better; if you ask a Southsider, they'll say South of the Liffey is better.

More of the touristy stuff is on the South Side; the Inner City of the South Side is also pretty commercial, lots of shopping and tourist stuff-- and my favorite cigar shop in the world is on Grafton Street.

The Inner City of the North Side is more working class, light industry, the fresh fish market, etc.
It does have slightly higher crime rates, but it isn't like they're both very safe by American Standards.

In terms of day tours, the presence of Dublin City Castle on the South Side probably makes it a marginally better bet for tourists.

YMMV, of course. I can only speak from my own experiences.
