Or after death, like Goldwater is, and Reagan, to a lesser degree, by the left. They despise him, regardless of his successes. Reagan wasn't a bigot - there wasn't a hateful bone in his body. Ditto for Goldwater. But they're both painted that way, because the left has very few cards and they play that one A LOT.

Perhaps not (and I actually believe not), but he was more than happy to play to racists when required.
